It may mean two things:

A) The Disney deal is up and we may get:

-Disney Channel HD
-Disney Junior +
-Disney XD HD

B) Or Virgin Media may just lose Disney Cinemagic.

With some channels closing on VM, maybe we should start a new "Going Soon" thread!?? ;)

Surely they'll replace them with something decent and not actually have it said that they've dropped an HD channel?:(

What have my views on virgin got to do with the simple question I asked? Your obsession with me is rather ridicolous and the fact you don't like being asked a question similar to which you asked yourself...speaks volumes.

I simply cannot understand why VM put on more and more +1 channels, its a total waste of channel space which could be occupied by new channels.

And why keep on adding channels that no one has heard of or not interested in, it seems that VM just want top annoy customers.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

Sorry Arthur but you really must stop assuming that your preferences are the same as all other viewers. Just because you consider some channels to be a waste of space does not mean that everyone agrees with you. I find the +1 channels a useful addition and would be very disappointed with VM if they did not cater to some less mainstream interests.

I agree about the plus ones, but there does appear to be plenty that welcome them and this is not a bespoke package, after all. But how on earth can you say nobody has heard of the Discovery channels? I reckon Discovery channel is easily in the top 5 recorded channels in my house. Any increase in content or additional hd channels from this network will be very welcome.

The plus one channels are very useful as sometimes there are more then three things viewers want to record at the same time so they come in very handy in our household.

Radio News: Bauer Media's bid to buy Absolute Radio falters at the 11th hour.

Bauer Media's bid to buy Absolute Radio is understood to have stalled at the 11th hour with the future of the music station still uncertain.

The German-owned private radio and magazine company emerged as the favourite to buy Absolute, owned by the Times of India parent company Bennett, Coleman & Co, after a rival consortium fronted by former Virgin Radio chief executive John Pearson pulled out.

The reality of multi channel TV is that if you miss a show because you already have 3 things recording then at least one, and probably all of them, will be repeated on its original channel, during the week, and we have terrestrial catch up, making in my view plus one channels a redundant waste of space for anyone with a pvr, and especially those with a TiVo. However, like I say, cable TV isn't bespoke for either Arthur or myself and we have to accept that there are a significant number of people who find them useful-mainly those who understandably don't want to fork out for the TiVo fee I guess. I just believe that the consumer technology exists to resolve the problem that they're supposed to address. Either way, if it means the addition of id and animal planet hd then I'm not complaining.

To be fair, package changes mean channels being made available to people on lower tiers, which IS good news for those people.

Channel number changes COULD mean there is more news to come, but they might simply be saying that they've made a start on tidying up the epg. Which again is good.

I don't know how you would expect any company to proclaim changes to their services, except positively?

It's just that I have never before seen a provider try to make a channel number change sound as if you are getting something exciting from them. I know that kind of news is followed in this thread and on DS as a hobby for some but that is a lot different to virgin posting it on their website as if it is to celebrated.

New channels are obviously different as well as a couple of packages moving between tiers.

Is there a recap of what new and exciting channels have actually been implemented in 2013 and are watchable right now, beside the +1 channels?

andy_m 03-02-2013 15:25

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

To be fair, Virgin haven't really tried to make it sound exciting. The bit about channel changes is tucked away at the bottom of the release -

"And finally we are moving things around for the following channels on January 31st Universal moves from channel number 162 to 137 Universal +1 moves from channel number 163 to 138 SyFy +1 moves from channel number 166 to 136"

and reads to me as informative rather than sensationalist. Of course, the reaction of some who've read it might make it seem like a big deal but you can't blame Virgin for that.

Follow the link above - there is a full recap.

Had a look and it us as you say, there for information. Just with an added PR twist to make it sound better which really isn't needed. You can tell customers channels have changed without making it sound like a polished turd.

The package changes are a big thing and leading to something interesting no doubt.

New channels though...apart from some HD version of channels (know they are appreciated) I can't actually see any new channels beside local Bbc, let alone exciting.

Do you ever read the responses to your posts, Arthur? You have raised this same question over and over.

The +1 channels are good for viewing/recording clashes. If you don't like them, don't watch them.

Channel space is not currently an issue for Virgin Media and this is not the reason for having fewer channels than you would like.

There isn't a shortage of channel space, so there's no problem with adding +1s.

No one doubts that the info is useful and glad it is being passed on. Was just questioning the way it was done, as if it was something special. Exciting new channel changes in 2013! kinda thing :D

I am amazed how many channel changes actually happen. Tend to browse the programme guide on the stb or an android app based EPG which changes the channel too, so only know the changes happen from announcements or reading it on a forum like this.

My view is just the channels on my list plus Shopping channels from the owners of the shopping channels that broadcast on Virgin TV right now (Ideal World, QVC and Gems TV) IS worth having.

All the rest of the channels that broadcast on Astra or Eurobird (Sky) are what I call 'Poor man TV' or 'Call me (If you are over 18) TV'

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

BSkyB has 10.33m TV customers and reported six-monthly pre-tax profits up 7.5% to £642m to 31 December, beating most analyst expectations. The number of customers taking high definition TV rose 93,000 to 4.56m of its total customer base. Revenue rose 5% to £3.5bn in the six months to the end of December. Average revenue per user rose £24 year on year to £568. Churn rose slightly from 9.6% at 31 December 2011 to 10.3% at the end of last year.
Sky should give a big thankyou to vm helping them obtain these great results for
1.Hefty price rise (still awaiting justification)
2.TV anywhere (I pad streaming channels a joke) for being a poor version of sky go
3.HD channels-Vm still ignorant to what customers want

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

My belief is that customers of VM should be given the best quality of programme and should be in competition with Sky, but they are not.

VM always tell me that they do not have capacity for new channels - so why put +1 channels on, when the so called TiVo box can record 3 channels at a time.

In the times that l speak with VM about new channels, l am told 'we are in talks with various companies' in that case, what do the directors of VM do all day.

Sky are way out in front with channel content and HD channels, so where are VM, when the rumour spreads from members about new channels, everyone looks to Media Boy for info.

My moan at VM is that if they don't have the capacity for new channels, then why put on +1.

Arthur's position is that he doesn't believe people want +1 channels. I accept that the are those that do, even though I'm not one of them. However, TCM 2, which is essentially TCM + about 8, and more 4+1 have launched this year alone. Which 2 were you referring to and - back to my question - could the money have been used on new content instead, or not?

As you must have noticed, VM rarely seems to make deals for individual channels. That's why new channels don't appear at launch but are "coming soon". They reach a deal with the channel suppliers for a bouquet of channels.

The main benefit of timeshift channels to the broadcaster is slightly increased reach, so extra advertising revenue. It's just as likely that taking these channels actually means VM pay less for the deal, leaving more money available to spend on new content.
