l am not sure Espn are going to be serious rivals to Sky as they also failed to bid for football league rights, seems to me that they will try to get sports which they don,t have to pay much for.

I think that there is something else going on:confused: ESPN could always be letting SKY get all of these and then go for 5 of the 6 PL bundles? Just my thoughts ( but I read too much in to things and analyse too much ).

Yes, that's exactly whats happened (obviously in a more professional manner than that). Don't forget that Sky currently also impose a interactive block on their channels on the non TiVo boxes.

I agree.

I don't really care who the major player is so long as one company has most of the packages. The way I see it is if they ever get the same amount it would be disaster and potentially very expensive for all of us.

Then again the European case could change everything anyway, who knows.

My point is DF that you dont know the ins and outs of the contract so as a VM employee shouldnt be speculating on here , just look at the trouble some of your other speculations on here have caused.

Agreed - but they shouldn't attack individuals who try to be helpful and give information, and then also make snide comments when the individual doesn't post; bit of a lose/lose situation, isn't it?

DF helps a lot of people on here im well aware of that , however speculation from VM employees just doesnt help , i fully agree personal attacks are not called for.

DF's signature reads "All views expressed on here are my own and may not be the same as Virgin Media". If DF wants to post speculation let him, he doesn't claim his posts are the gospel truth and he doesn't claim to be speaking on behalf of the company he works for.

This thread is 99% rumour and speculation anyway. I gave up believing most posts here a good few months ago. I'm surprised so many people get upset when things are posted here such as the launch date of a channel that Virgin themselves didn't confirm, the date then comes and goes and no sign of the channel.

The Red Herring at the moment is the Red Button facility. I'm just going to wait for the official announcement from Virgin before getting my nickers in a twist. Saying that if all of the unconfirmed rumours are true, I'll be enjoying Red Button heaven tomorrow night.

If it's of any interest the 14 sports interactive streams don't appear to be broadcasting anything now, unless they have changed the parameters since I tuned them in on my TV that has a cable tuner built in.

They just seem like placeholders now.

Company founded by Universal Music and Sony Music is in talks with Channel 4, Virgin Media and ITV over potential partnerships.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011...uk?INTCMP=SRCH

If Virgin did become partners, I wonder if we'd get an extensive amount of music on demand via Virgin Media Player? Better still, a Tivo app for all you Tivo lovers!

http://www.electric-sofa.com/

Electric Sofa Media are launching three brand new televisions channels in 2011, on a number of broadcast platforms, free to air, in the UK and Ireland.

Film GB - the first ever movie channel devoted to British cinema

Sofa Screen - a new movie channel showing Hollywood Classics and new titles

Sofa Stars - the new home of the best entertainment

Okay so I joined their forum to try and learn a bit more. This new company are currently going through the Due Diligence procedure and should be launching in the summer. They have confirmed in their forum that the channels will be encrypted and will not be launching on Freeview. When asked if they will be on Freesat, SKY or Virgin they simply answer:

"Sorry we're unable to confirm, for contractual reasons, which platforms the channels will be on."

It is clear from other posts that whilst they are still months away from launch, TV deals are in place. Hopefully Virgin can get a deal in place if they haven't already signed up. Film GB would be awesome.

Yeah I've read some rubbish on this thread before but I must admit that was a real low for me, and this thread. I was so excitied when I thought I'd discovered a new channel launching that nobody else had spotted.

Anyone else remember iSeeTV on Telewest 10 years ago?

"NHS and Telewest bring healthcare into the home"

Debenham and Iceland were involved in this too.

You used to be able to do shopping from Iceland on the old CWC Digital service.

Did not realise that being on ex NTL for iceland that must of been something of a revelation as even today they do not do web deliveries and you have to go instore to get them to deliver, thanks for the info as i made a jokey reference without realising the above mersey70.:)

The iSeeTV thing was a bit different in that it let customers see and talk directly with an operator at those particular businesses.

It's funny seeing what remains of those many interactive sites which were available when I first got cable TV. I'm sure we'll see them return and more in better ways on TiVo apps.

I think Iceland did do internet shopping back then too. There were all sorts of services on CWC. Banking, Pizza Delivery, email and even internet through the TV.

But they didn't bank on the fact that most people use the TV for simply watching TV and still do. I know Sky lost a fortune on their version of iTV.

Obviously everyone just uses a PC for all of that stuff now but at the time it was innovative but my word it was SLOW!

I would personally have to disagree, I think the TV will always be mainly for entertainment and the PC for the rest but time will tell.

There was a time when I thought cameras on phones wouldn't take off but I was proven wrong. Now phones are more about apps than about using them to call people.

The older ineractive TV sites on cable were buggy and slow due to the limitations of the software but having had used the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire app on TiVo I can tell you it's delivered well and works great. I'm hoping we get LoveFilm and Shoutcast some day.

Of course apps like Love Film would be great thru the TV as they are entertainment.

There's no reason why they wouldn't take off if they are delivered well. I wouldn't mind checking out the current special offers at Tesco's or checking my latest bank transactions on my TV.

I personally doubt it will happen.

It's far easier using a PC and keyboard than a remote control. I'd personally be surprised if such applications were reprised as when they debuted through the TV broadband internet was in it's infancy, indeed far fewer homes even had a home PC and smartphones were a distant pipe dream.

I just don't see the institutions bothering but that's just my view but i'm sure it could technically work well.

I think we should continue this discussion after those 100s of apps Cindy Rose mentioned have appeared. This time next year? :)

Mate I couldn't really give a toss whether they do or don't launch I just personally don't think there is much demand from the publc to be fiddling with their remote control to look at their bank account or go shopping, we have been there and done that.

I can think of far more useful apps than that. And for the record Cindy Rose claimed that Tivo will provide '100's of apps within 12 months' as early as 1st December 2010 so they had better get a very, very serious move on!!

This guy is talking about things like banking though which surely isn't what Tivo is about. That's been tried and scrapped long ago.

That's pointless in my opinion, why use the TV as you are obviously at home anyway. Just use the PC.

Indeed, what a waste of valuable resources it would be both creating an app and maintaining it.

TV Banking was quite clever in it's day.............. a decade ago!

The problem with apps on TV is speed , example say Yell , would it not be quicker to find a plumbers number on your yell mobile app and phone them straight from it , to me its a novelty offering , maybe the streaming apps will take off if any arrive , we'll see.

In that instance I guess using a smartfone would be the best choice but as long as the Tivo apps provide content (which after all is what it's connected to a TV for) it could be really good. I think Cindy is perhaps being a bit ambitious with her '100's of apps in a year' claim though but we'll see.

Even text based content like news and sport is valuable but if i'm ever going to get it i'm looking for premium video content and nothing less and I will be happy to pay for such content.

Not long until red button will be available guys!!!

All you need to do is look at the current range of Smart TVs by Samsung and others that currently have their own app stores. There are plenty of apps available but many of them are not that great and some just offer extra info for channels or pre existing services.

I think people are hoping and indeed expecting Tivo will offer a better range of apps than connected TV's though due to it's superior connectivity.

Okay. Scary. I'm about to agree with mersey70 :D

I have no intention of ever using any apps (other than iPlayer if necessary) or YouTube on my Tivo. They are a complete waste of time. In my opinion only, of course.

The current apps may well be a waste of time but a lot of customers are expectng far greater things to come, apps seem to be a big selling point for the STB.

Please don't ever agree with me again Carlos, what little credibility I have will be shattered ;)
