Thanks for the explanation Lew, it has clafified me a bit, and too be honest made me feel a bit better and more confident that we will see a pretty good Red button service when fully functional.

I expect we will see a few events, and as the months roll on, we will get access to more and more with greater funtionality, until the new footy season starts, when hopefully it will be all systems go!

Thanks again

I am sure when it fully launches on VM you will get at least a comparable service to what Sky provided on their own platform when the deal was signed.

They should give sky customers all sports red button content

Just tried it on my parents' SA V+ box. The multiscreen app loads OK and I can select the 4 different streams (which actually look quite good quality for SD streams), but I can't select the "Stats" or "Draw" options. I can't select them with the cursor keys and pressing the relevant number on the keypad does nothing.

By they I assume you mean BSkyB?

None of us have any facts to say they haven't, it could merely be technical reasons why they are not currently available now.

Or it could be a business decision by VM having not been ready to provide it to Tivo customers.

I honestly think it is high time VM customers stopped assuming everything is down to Sky. Let's face it you now have 16 of Sky's own branded HD channels and now even the red button.

The old argument of Sky hogging things is something I find boring now, maybe it's time VM customers started questioning their own provider more than BSkyB.

Nevertheless no one ever said a full red button service would launch right now, i'm sure it will though soon.

The red box stayed on the screen when I chose stream 4. Samsung V+ box. Not that bothered myself as I was just trying it out during half-time in the Scottish football, but it could do with sorting.

No good if you keep having to reboot them is it Virgin.

You need to leave it for a little bit if it says "just a moment" as it's actually still loading data. If it sticks for more than 1 min then a reboot may be needed.

It's still in soft launch phase so we are ironing out any last minute issues.

Matt its a new piece of Tech you have to give it a bit of time, just like TiVo, there will be teething problems. Leave feedback on the help and support forum they are pleased to receive it, as it helps them to assess the problems and create fixes.:D

The other night on SS1 HD the red button was just showing cricket at the side of it, this loaded fine, but on SS2 HD it just showed a red button, pressing it brought up the just a moment caption, but nothing actually ever loaded, no matter how many times itried it, but switching back again the cricket loaded fine...

Standard 1080. My TV is setup to display native 4:3 images correctly though, not in stretch-o-vision so that's what might be causing the red boxes to be displayed wrong. Box-generated graphics are displayed in 4:3.

Interesting. I wonder if the programmers at Sky are expecting that the VM boxes will switch to SD output for the multiscreen app and are therefore assuming an anamorphic picture. My parents' V+ is connnected via Scart and the boxes are correct there.

Exactly, if Sky let VM have red button they have let them have it. But let them have it they have along with the vast majority of even their HD content. The old adage of Sky withholding things is just a bit daft now.

If everything red button wise isn't available just now I really seriously doubt it's Sky's fault.

Apologies if this has been covered already....

I see from the thread that some areas had freezing on the red button. I stay in Larkhall, South Lanarkshire and on 4 attempts to switch on the tennis yesterday I had a complete freeze, non reponsive to options and back to tv, and had to reboot. I gave up after that

I'm not that bothered about Red Button tbh (but if you pay for something that is available to you, you definitely want to make sure you can get it should something turn up that takes your fancy).

I'd love to tell you what box I have (in case it's a hardware issue) but I'm back at my desk in London and 470miles from my box....

Thanks MB/Spiderplant, so effectively VM are running a service where potentially some of the Hardware they have out there can't cope with it? If it's not regional or Headend related but seems to be quite common considering only a small % of VM users post/look at Cable Forum...

Is this a case for a replacement box? I have got another HD (newer) upstairs which I will check when I get back to Larky on Friday.

I think it's too early to conclude it's the box at fault. Do other interactive services such as BBC work on it?

I work in an environment where if you put something into 'live' that does not work as anticipated you get mullered.

Is there no User Acceptance Testing out there? I seem to remember the Tivo boxes were given out to a select few..... should it not have been the same for the Red Button?

As indicated on a previous note - I wasn't counting the minutes to the release of the red button - but it's an interesting insight into some Corporate bodies view of what can go to live and when..... Have VM been put under too much pressure to release too soon perhaps?

This is a very valid point. But when all the coding has to be done from scratch they will have decided to do it in bits? I think that it is the same with all software (Release it and then update it).

I stand to be corrected on this but just my thoughts?

Where are you getting that date from? The only staggering thing is the wild guesses you seem to be taking at a release date.

There is nothing staggering about it. VM and TiVo had to ensure that the main services were working first before starting work on any add on or extra features. You don't seem to understand that. What's to say they didn't start planning these features last year? Do you know anything about software programming and testing?

Re: sky sports red button

The contract was only signed towards the end of last year - most major software releases (unless they are fix patches) tend to be six monthly or yearly.

I find it hard to believe that any development work would have been undertaken before contracts were signed, and after contracts were signed, they would need to be specified, agreed, signed off, developed, unit tested, system tested, regression tested (probably a couple of cycles of those development/tests), beta tested, and then, and only then, released to the consumer.

A very good sense of humour one must say.

Not being funny but not everything he posts is gospel. Yes he may talk to some VM employees but it won't always be accurate.

Now that VM has the red button and, from August, Football First; what's the betting that Sky will start a new sports channel (one where they are unable to agree carriage terms with VM) and move the recorded Premier League highlights to that channel?

Nothing surprises me with Sky.

could virgin not bring there own sport channel out and sign some games on there that sky dont want. Then virgin can bring out there own red button.

I was under the impression that the RED button was being activated for customers now, so that we can see Football First NOW.

Does it mean that VM have told us porkies again, and it won't be available till AUGUST (what year):)

No the red button is available now but won't be properly up and running till the new season. However on the TiVo red button will take longer to arrive.

Any ideas whether the match choice on VM will have the option to record your chosen game ?

I honestly don't know. Can you do that on Sky?

Yes when you press the R button it gives you a list of games that are on and you just select the game you want and press R and it records it , hopefully VM will get this it's a great feature.

Stephen 04-05-2011 23:23

Re: sky sports red button

It all depends on whether it can be programmed and if they plan to have that feature. Only time will tell I guess.

And when l said Media boy said that yesterday in his blog you seemed doubtful about it and gave the impression that it was coming sooner.

The red button on Sky is brilliant, you choose what game you want to watch. And the good thing about it is, l think two seasons ago the title went to the wire, and Sky carried both games on the red button, so you could switch between them - it was brilliant, wether VM do the same, its hard to tell.

That is correct , hopefully these features will come to VM as well , I guess time will tell.

I think you would need the v+ box

Or the TIVO when the SS Red button launches on that.

When is the exact date when the red button comes to tivo no one is sure at the moment.

Lew 05-05-2011 15:07

Re: sky sports red button

I would assume that there's no set date as such, and that development will start once the non-TiVo version has most of the bugs ironed out.

There is no date set so anything reported on here is total speculation at the moment.

it would be good if we did have a set date for the red button.

But if VM set a date and some issues came up and it was then delayed everyone would moan. So best just say its coming soon and it will appear when its ready.

Very true I would agree 100% on the comment that you have given. It will come when it comes.

One suspects at least a year away if not longer than that.

Just because we have not had it before has nothing to do with the future, having the red button on tivo would give us much better functionality when we watch Sky Sports.

Yes I agree 100%, But as you say I will agree with as it will make a welcome addition to TIVO. But we have not had it on TIVO so we will be grateful when it turns up as we know it will. (Coming soon)LOL
