Is there any point now after todays article --
Neil Berkett has an announcement to make: Virgin Media's battle with Sky for the pay-TV market is over.

I don't think Neil Berkett actually says "TiVo, currently available to Virgin's premium customers", I believe these are the words of the lady who wrote the article.

Maybe I'm reading the article incorrectly, but the TIVO available to premium customers isn't a direct quote from Berkett.

May the Tivo hype continue please. As a Sky customer (just VM up to err... 50MB ??), I am sure they will roll out extra programmes - Atlantic springs to mind - and be amenable to offering goodies to existing clients.

We shall see;)

I have signed up on the Website too, feel's like age's ok and still no update. It must be coming soon, had a VM engineer round the other week to check my V+ box and he stated he currently had the TiVo installed and that it was an awesome bit of kit. Obviously he said he could comment no further just that it will be worth the wait.

What I think VM should do ASAP to keep customer's happy is to issue a price and release date for all customer's on all tier's so people can start saving etc.

Agreed I heard a price of 189 all in for existing XL and VIP customers but nothing concrete.

All that's been confirmed is that it will be £189 for existing customers with an addition £3 monthly charge (this is also the Mates Rates tariff).

For new customers it will be £239 with the additional monthly £3 charge.

Hopefully sooner rather than later... I've still got an old silver TVDrive and the HDD is about to die imo. Many HD recordings start to play then end after 12 minutes, not allowing you to go past that time to carry on, playback of a HD recording can be affected if recording another HD channel (it stutters and jumps, occasionally the box will reboot) and if recording two HD channels the poor drive sounds like it's going to fall out of the box.

I don't really see the point of a swap out now when I'll be wanting to swap it for TiVo as soon as it's available (I am a VIP customer).

Andy.

Feel better, Chad. You're not the only one to notice that it was Amanda Andrews, Media Editor, The Telegraph who said all of that, not Neil Berkett, although she misleadingly attributed it to him.

I also feel that she misrepresented some of the functionality of the TiVo box by confusing previous statements about its 10Mb internet connection being separate from the family's main broadband connection and the TiVo actually having browser functionality.

Journalists! You can't believe a word they say someone else said!

Re: TiVo

There is an article here that seems to suggest our chances of getting lovefilm on tivo are enhanced by the take over of Love film by Amazon

Quote:

Fortunately, with Amazon striding into the picture (and, if necessary, the Competition Commission willing), Lovefilm has a better chance than most of doing the right kind of deals with the Hollywood studios – who will be mindful of maintaining a good relationship with "Earth's biggest selection", or whatever Amazon calls itself.
Apparently movie streaming is big business in the States but is prevented from taking off here due to one company owning the rights. With a company as big as Amazon getting involved, then we might stand a chance of the monopoly being challenged. Just what we need. Interesting reference to the competition comission possibly getting involved as well. Things are getting more interesting.

That is all very well assuming you have a very short list of favourites ! Sure for the BBCOne HD and ITV HD which have channel numbers in the low 100-115 range it's fine, but BBC HD for example is 187 and SyfyHD is 167 so if I've got any other favourites then these ones are soon going to drop off the page.

Maybe if the full TV Guide on the V+ was at all quick/easy to use then I wouldn't have to use the favourites button to find out what's on and could then use it just for HD channels. If TIVO fixes that then fair enough.

It should work everywhere upon release so unlikely for the to be a rollout schedule and the 500 staff who received one are nationwide.

I expect that is why the sign up form has been online so that they can be sure that they have ordered more than enough boxes for the expected influx of customers signing up for the box.

It's already been beta tested even prior to the 500 staff rollout. Obviously there has been and will be a few tweaks when it's rolled into the wilderness as no amount of testing can emulate the real world.

Obviously they are strategically planning for this (pre-registrations, existing customers first, new customers later) so am sure things will be just fine.

As far as I'm aware both existing customers and those on "mates rates" will pay £189 (£149 for box, £40 for activation) and then a monthly fee of £3 a month.

Is it true you have to have triple XL or VIP for initial roll out ? I only have L phone and really don't need calls all day.

Thought it was just XL TV as the criteria for first orders not triple unless that determines the who is first in the queue for customers, so are triple XL customers the first batch for orders before XL TV customers? We will soon know from the sound of things.

Good to see a fellow S1 owner in here :) I can't wait to see what the offer is for us. Funnily enough I finally brought myself round to selling my S1 this week, only for the hard drive in it to die soon after! So I'll take it down from sale and hopefully that way I can get a discount.

I havn't used a PVR anywhere near as advanced as my S1 Tivo, and that was made 12 years ago. You guys new to TiVo are going to be in for an absolute treat I assure you. I'm finding it hard to get the wife acceptance factor for the new one though :(

Can anyone who has one say if it`s noisy or not?

My old sky box was fierce when it warmed up a bit and the fans kicked in. My sammy v+ box is quiet as a mouse, but looking at the vents in the tivo box i`m wondering if it`s going to be a biy noisey.

Microsoft is suing TiVo over claimed EPG, and secure purchase of VOD content IP infringements in the US.

http://mashable.com/2010/01/20/microsoft-sues-tivo/

http://paidcontent.org/article/419-m...-over-patents/

http://www.multichannel.com/article/...ents_Again.php

http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/...ces-to-US.aspx

Two possible reasons for this, to protect it's own offerings or to reach cross licensing deals and earn some licensing revenue. Either way it should have no immediate impact on VM TiVo launch.

It has a seperate power pack, like the V-HD box. It makes little or no noise.

For all the fuss people are making about the third tuner, while not being a betting man, I'd place a bet on it not being an issue by the time TiVo is generally available.

So we have to wait until march for installs :-(

Re: TiVo

March is for 3rd tuner activation through software update (hardware is already in the Cisco box), fully expect first customers will receive them in February and the 14th looks the date from the logo on the van.

Re: TiVo

I hope the press release is 1st Feb and they also announce 20-30 mbps upgrades to urinate on the Atlantic launch.

Me too!

Re: TiVo

It would be a good announcement to take the sails somewhat out of the Atlantic launch for sure, though can't see VM being that bothered to plan that intentionally. As for the tuner comment, by general availability I was referring to all and sundry. Obviously as has been previously stated existing customers will take precedence.

I'm not making a fuss but it IS enough of an issue with me to stay with my V+ box until it is activated ;)

Apparently Fifa 12 will have optional commentary as downloadable content. When your wife or girlfriend wants a go, Andy Gray tells them to put the controller down, get in the kitchen and cook dinner..
