And sky are only to happy to brag about this,i cancelled my sky sub about a month ago and upgraded to movies and sport with vm costing £27.50 per month.I have been for last week constantly called by sky asking me to come back last offer was HD Box(free) and sky world half price for 12 months (£24.25) and no hd sub,Snapped it up straight away and cancelled premium channels with vm.Best of both worlds and saving £3.25 a month,Think a price war is coming,All the rep kept going on about was vm were only getting Sky sports 1+2 in hd.

While you might not be able to see WWE in HD for the first broadcast there do seem to show repeats of Raw on Sky Sports 1. Not sure about Smackdown

I see they are now advertising pretty much on the main shopping page. Sorry if this has already been posted, scouted quickly but could not see anything.

And there is a banner on there still stating all our hdtv channels come at no extra cost. So i can only hope this will stay the same when sky sports hd launches. I would presume it would if they are advertising such a thing.

I reccived one to, and pop on tv to say my card for my v+ box is on its
way. one question i have on my v hd box the card no begins with 20, if
i have got it right from what i have seen that card is ok.

Check this out from Skysports website, looks like we wont be getting all the football on HD1/2

The first Ford Super Sunday of the season will be Liverpool v Arsenal, live on Sky Sports HD1, followed by the return of Ford Monday Night Football between Manchester United and Newcastle United on Sky Sports HD1 on August. 16.

The fixtures are part of a record number of live HD football matches across four dedicated Sky Sports HD channels; Sky Sports HD1, Sky Sports HD2, Sky Sports HD3 and Sky Sports HD4.Sky Sports News will also be available in HD in August.

I hope the Prem is still exclusive to SS1/2 but we know what Sky are like.

From this Saturday the Sky/VM deal will be fully cleared by the Irish authorities. So the HD channels should appear next week.

VM have been waiting a very long time to get these HD channels and have sold their own channels to Sky to make it happen. They will not delay a day longer than they have to to launch. So get the HDMI cables ready!

As fantastic as all this new HD news is, we desparately need bigger hard drives for the V+!!!

I had barely 2 pages worth of recordings recently and it only showed about 15 hours left available.

I assume we have to wait for the TiVO box to come out before this happens. The enemy are releasing their 1TB box so hopefully we wont be too far behind

i would love virgin to bring out centralisation recording, where all the box would need to do is save a reference, then with its superior technology, you would be able to playback in VOD and us a a viewer would be non the wiser.

I totally agree we NEED BIGGER hard drives i was the same the HD content takes up so much room on the drive it doesn't leave much room for anything else.:)

I'm sure this has been mentioned in one of VM's annual reports. "Cloud storage" as it's often referred to would be ideal if the streaming worked consistently well. Perhaps a combination would work more efficiently - allowing you the option to store a local copy or remote copy, or move copies between hard-drive and the cloud. There's no technical reason it can't happen - currently you're allowed to store computer files on VM's servers through the internet, which can be accessed when needed.

If the VOD version was always available AND the quality was not reduced in anyway, either video or audio, compared to the linear version then it would be acceptable - but from what I see and hear of VOD it is not the same quality as the linear feed.

Slightly off topic but does anyone know if there is a Disney HD channel in the pipeline ? Seems unlike Disney to miss the boat , I know they have cinemagic Hd but most Disney shows are in Hd , you only need to look on demand for proof of that.

Just wondering if there will be any additional charge to watch Sky Basic/Premium HD content on XL? I guess we'll know soon-ish.

Either way, you know that Sky will respond to whatever VM announce, probably on the same day. They did it to BT last week and when VM itself launched on V Day, Sky choose that same day to announce the launch of Picnic. Guess which event got more coverage in the press?

So, watch out everyone for Sky's counter-attack. In a sense its already begun, with Sky eager to remind everyone that to watch all 5 Sky Sports channels in HD, you need a satellite dish on the side of your house.

I have seen rumoured on the web that Sky Movies HD and Sky Sports HD will be free to viewers of Sky Sports or Sky Movies.

I have been told by an insider that the Sky Basic HD Channels may join the TV Size XL package.

I agree that SD quality is much poorer than linear channels although I find the HD streams are identical - although no DD 5.1 audio which sucks. So HD progs with excellent audio production (e.g. Doctor Who, True Blood, The Good Wife to name a few) must be recorded or watched live to be fully appreciated anyway.

Also, VoD access is far too hit and miss. Sometimes you get lucky and it'll work first time but, more often than not, you have to try several times before it actually works.

For anyone who has XL TV will have all new HD channels at no extra cost (Excl sports and movies - you only need to subscribe to these channels to get SS HD and SM HD no matter what size TV package your on.)

Merger Review Process


The merger review process of the Competition Authority involves:

(i) a review period (Phase 1), following which a determination must be made either to clear the merger or to proceed to a full investigation as described below. The Competition Authority's deadline to make a Phase 1 determination is one month after the appropriate date (as defined in section 19(6) of the Competition Act, 2002) or 45 days if any of the undertakings which have made the notification submits proposals to the Competition Authority.

(ii) a full investigation (Phase 2) if, after the Phase 1 investigation, the Competition Authority is unable to conclude that the proposed transaction will not lead to a substantial lessening of competition in any market for goods or services in the State. The Competition Authority's deadline to make a Phase 2 determination is four months after the appropriate date. Within this deadline, the Competition Authority must determine whether to clear the merger (with or without conditions) or prohibit the merger.

The appropriate date from which the above deadlines are calculated is normally the date of notification. However, this changes to a later date if the Competition Authority issues within one month from the date of notification a formal requirement to the merging parties to provide further information.

These deadlines do not change even if the period incorporates or ends on public holidays, bank holidays or Sundays.

As I inferred earlier in the thread, that is my opinion too. If there was a problem, I'm sure VM and Sky would have heard about it by now. But legally, it's by this Saturday is when the deal is cleared, then Sky transfer the cash, the stock exchange and other forms are filled in and at that point VMtv is owned by Sky.

I know of no technical reason why the HD channels can't be launched at that point. VM has gone to the extreme measure of selling their channels to make this happen, I don't foresee there being much more of a wait for them.

Just watching sky sports news (sky sports advert channel) and it is unbelievable how much they are playing on the fact they have FOUR dedicated HD channels, and is the only place to watch all our HD football coverage...

sky really dont like the fact everyone else is catching up, and in some respects overtaken sky in the market..

although premier league games appear to be live on hd1/hd 2... it does not change the face that previous matches such as championship were also on 1 and 2, of course now, moved to 3. dirty move be sky...

I can see a day where virgin overtakes sky....

before we even had the prospect of sky hd channels, virgin has a large customer base on hd, now all of sudden we are getting most of sky hd channels, they think customers will switch for the extra 2 channels... they didnt switch before, so what makes them think they will now.

I dont think sky have got any plays left.... oh yes i forgot... sky sports news in HD... just for hd channel amount.. nothing about quality.

we get film 4 hd... something actually worth HD, not like sky news ect...

I think you will find that Sky have always made a big deal about the channels they have and so they should if they will not advertise to their customers what is good about then then who will? Virgin media could learn a thing or two about self promotion from them.

And VM will never take over Sky when they are only available to less then 50% of the population, VM have held steady at 3.5 million customers in the last decade where as Sky have increased numbers quite a bit in that time. I really don't see why people get so wound up they are only a utility companies and you should go with who give you the best deal and choice.

So we now have two dates for film four HD and two channels, the 8th and the 20th and channel 429 and 432. I do enjoy the speculation.
