I would try downloading 2 different files at the same time, although try to pick different game files from the ones you have already downloaded, as this may interfere with the cache.

Try at different periods of the day, and if you find the speed is the same, then you may need to get VM to check things out.

Hope this helps.

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

It's been over a week since I recieved my "You've been upgraded" email, speed is still 2Mb M

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2009/07/57.png

I have been using https://mysso.virginmedia.com daily to check if my package has changed but today I received "The system we use to check your username and password is currently unavailable. Please try again later." and now "Invalid email/password. Please remember passwords are case-sensitive. If your caps-lock is on this may cause you to enter your password incorrectly."

I am seriously considering canceling my contract with VM as I have no desire to sit for a morning chatting to an indian call center to get this problem sorted.

I live in Leeds and even people that didnt register for the new speeds have been upgraded in my area!

EDIT: Just checked my username and password by logging into webmail with the account and that works.

vicisoux, Just a thought as I don't know whether this is relevant for this round of upgrades but have you unplugged your modem as when my service was upgraded last year I needed to do that before the 10Mb came through.

Hey Jo thanks for the reply, yes I have unplugged my modem.

The other thing you could consider if you don't want to phone customer services is to raise a query on Virgin Media Newsgroups which are staffed by VM techs.

Details on how to set up the newsgroups can be found here:-

http://www.virginmedia.com/myvirginm...setting-up.php

....and you need the newsgroup:- virginmedia.support.broadband.cable

Again thanks for the reply Jo, strangely enough I had just been browsing the site and this information was quoted, I may give this a try.

EDIT: Downloaded that newsgroup and the webspace one, found

"Morning all,

We are having some systems issues today and are unable to access accounts,
ubr's etc.
We will try and answer as best we can, and hopefully they should be able to
get it all working soon.
Our apologies for this."

I guess this could be the same reason I cant access https://mysso.virginmedia.com/

I've been upgraded overnight and ahead of schedule.I only just found out because it took only 7 minutes to download the last episode of Torchwood which it was going to take 2 hours last time I attempted to do so.

So summat to be happy about...:D

Nice to get something earlier than expected for a change.

I don't know what the difference in the number of upgrades that are being handled this time as opposed to last years 4>10Mb upgrade, but, it sure looks like VM are doing these upgrades in a shorter time frame this year.

vicisoux, I live in Leeds too and ours and my neighbours are up to 10MB. Could you tell me which modem you have ?? Grey modem or Black / Blue ??

Just I was told by the VM web site I needed to upgrade the grey modem, but when I chatted with India CS they cancelled the new modem as they told me the grey modem supports the new speed. So I found the Newgroup support and asked their advice, who told me that the grey modems dont support the 10MB speed and sent me a new modem which is working fully.

Hope this helps as the Support on the newsgroup is brilliant as they reply very quickly and will help you all the way.

Anyone in Swindon actually got the upgrade?
I registered for the upgrade right at the start.

The timetable says Swindon has now been done, didn't say this a few days ago.
http://www.virginmedia.com/myvirginm.../timetable.php

So I excitedly re-booted my modem...

Speed tests still spot on for 2Mb, as they have always been.
The "my virgin media" page says 2Mb M
and the modem status says: Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 2148000 bps

So despite the timetable saying it's done, I'm still on 2Mb in every way!

I had the very same problem as you. Thats why I contacted the newsgroup and a very kind Tech guy (Kevin) on there from VM told me:

"Your NTL120 is actually only tested between 8-9Mbps and as such does need replacing."

5 days later the new modem arrived by UPS and got it all activated. Very helpful and very fast service. :D

I noticed your message and I've replied to it for you with my experience I hope it helps your case.

MikeyB, as you may have noticed I asked vicisoux which modem he had, hopefully if you have the black / blue modem your upgrade will be going through and you just have to wait, but if you have the grey modem you will need to upgrade the modem.

Got upgraded on Tuesday (CF23 7** area in Pentwyn). Loving it, seeing downloads run along at 1MBps is something I haven't experienced since my university lan days. But this time, I'm not limited to HTTP downloads only.... Wheeee!

Whats My speed please.
I downloaded a game file at 300KBps then dropped to a steady 250KBps
I dowloaded another and it dropped at 49KBps climbing to a steady 110 KBps.

John I'm not sure what speed your getting, but haven't you seen the Speed Test at the top of this screen, just click on that and it'll tell you what your speed is.

John S 17-07-2009 13:16

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

Virgin/NTL and this thread says that speedests are not a true reflection of performance saying the best test is to download a couple of game files.
Ive done exactly that and find that with a couple of game files downloading my speed is 110 KBps which is less than 1MB on my 2MB connection which is how it feels to me.
The above speedtest might come out better sometimes but is pointless as it takes about 15 seconds before it runs and recently it doesnt run at all but the arrow says it is with endless lag spikes and pings look very muck like an overloaded network.
Instead of the needle showing a steady speed it is like a rev counter up and down then peaking at the end of the test at the maximum speed in other words useless.

Yeah, you need to ring tech support or go on the newsgroups and request a new modem be sent out to you.

Hi MikeyB, after several days of modem rebooting I discovered that I'd been upgraded, sometime in the middle of last week.
So it seems that at least some parts of Swindon have been done.

Remember even if an area has been enabled, not everyone who registered will get it straight away - they are doing the upgrades in batches every day to manage the network load

My upgrade happened this week - I was testing a wireless adaptor and the speed test went haywire (I thought) with a speed of 9.5 Meg. Since then, I get odd flashes of 8/9 Megs but normally around 2/3 and sometimes as low as 500KB/s!

I'll give it time as it's only just happened

I am in Harrogate HG3 and I seem to have now been upgraded. According to tests on sites like speed.io, I am now getting between 5 and 8MB. Internet browsing doesn't seem any quicker though. When I registered I was told I needed a new modem which hasn't come yet so hopefully it will be on its way soon. I have the blue modem, Maximum Downstream Data Rate shows as 10242000, Maximum Upstream Data Rate shows as 514000

If they have been upgraded it is possible there is a fault on your account and the easiest way to resolve this is via the newsgroup as you will probably get more joy than phoning them. You can do this by setting a newsgroup account up in a programme such as windows live mail. Haven't been notified but assume i am now on 10mb but only getting between 3.5 and 5.8 depending on which speedtest i try. Just posted this in the newsfeed and noticed someone else is getting a new modem. Mine is the old ntl: 200 so hope they will give me a new one as well.

I should have said XP or Vista, the download hasn't decreased it, it has just decreased itself. Looks like you need a new modem to me.

Thank you for that. I have just rung broadband support and they confirmed that my modem can't handle 10mb's. Why didn't they tell me that yesterday when I rang them:mad: Anyway, they're sending me a new modem. Are there any particular anomalies to oook out for when setting a new modem up? And thanks to everyone for their help on this.:):)

I think it's just a case of remove old one, plug new one in and ring Virgin to activate it on your account.

I finally managed to drag the computer away from my wife last night and post in the VM newsgroups.

Was quite late so no reply by the time I went to bed, but just logged onto the My Virgin Media pages and it says 10Mb M :D whereas last night it still said 2Mb M

Have to see what I get when I get home, can't get newsgroups here at work, so see what they say about a new modem, currently got the ntl 120 modem.

They will probably replace your modem

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

Was going to post an update last night, but we had a power cut!

Anyway, this was the reply in the newsgroups:
I have configured it for the 10 meg now please run the test again and
let us know how you get on. The modem you have should be fine with the 10
meg.

Strange how some people get told the ntl 120 will need replacing, other get told it will be fine.

Did some speed tests yesterday evening, and just done one this morning, and getting 5Mb:
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2009/07/30.png

It's almost constantly that speed on any speed test, and if I'm wireless or directly connected to the modem.
Did manage to post this back on the newsgroups last night before the power went.
Wait to see what they say.

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

Perhaps the uncertainty regarding whether the ntl 120 modem is capable of 10Mb/s may be explained by the Chetnet website.
To quote their information on the ntl:home 100/120/200 modems:
Quote:

All do support 10Mbps Tier of Service, provided that they are used with an "003" or greater version of firmware.

Because that ping is a random figure subject to all kinds of inaccuracy that doesn't actually mean anything ;)

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

Well no sign of being sent a new modem yet.

Latest posts from the newsgroup said they can't see any network problems, and asking me to post power levels, guess I should have done that before anyway

Quote:

As I can see no issues from our end there seems to be a local issue. Can you
provide your current power levels.
Also it may be an idea to tweak your network card settings ans sometimes
these can restrict speeds somewhat.
Still at a rock solid 5Mb

Actually, how about I post my levels here...
Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Frequency : 402750000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : 64 QAM
Downstream Receive Power Level : 2.93 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 34.88 dB

Upstream Frequency : 25800000 Hz
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 46.00 dBmv

Try at different periods of the day, and if you find the speed is the same, then you may need to get VM to check things out.

Hope this helps.

;)

Thanks for this further advice VMboy. After trying further game downloads with poor results I decided to join Newsgroups and posted my problem. Like MikeyB I am now awaiting the arrival of a new 256 modem to replace my aged Ntl:Home 100. I was advised that this was up to the job when I registered but it seems there can be issues with both this and the 120.

Thanks again.

My speed has been substantially less than 10mb:

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2009/07/11.png

It was only about 4mb until I changed my modem connection to Ethernet. At first they said my NTL120 was ok but after I posted the results of downloading a couple of files they said they had ordered me a new one to rule out a modem issue.

You can see the reason why I came back to VM for my Internet, as that is the usual speed I get all the time, well chuffed with it as well;)

I was one of the customers who got the free update from 2 to 10 Meg and was paying £25 a month for it. Yet since my return I am now paying £20, after the first 3 months at £15.

I am getting similar results to you when running checks using speedtest.net. When I test using speed.io it gives a reading typically 1-2mb faster.
I would be interested to see what figures you got using this test site.

Click on the Connection button in the header of this page and see what your Host address is. Although you live in a certain postal address it does not necessarily follow that this is the area that will show up in the upgrade list.

For example, mine is cpc2 stre 4 -0 -0 cust XXX.bagu.cable.ntl.com

The stre stands for Stretford and that is the area that will show in the list rather than Urmston where I actually live.

If the abbreviation isn't clear to you, post your host address and another member will be sure to be able to tell you what it represents but XXX out your customer number.

Not saying it doesn't just can't grasp the connection myself?

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

Can I offer an observation which I have noticed today which may, or may not, help those that are not seeing full speeds on test. I have both IE6 and Firefox 3.0..10. on my PC. Using speedtest.net I am constantly showing results of 5-6mb in IE6. Using Firefox I am always getting more than 9.5mb, and sometime going over 10.
I do not pretend to understand if there is a valid reason for these results, maybe there is a difference in the way the browsers work? Perhaps one of the more technical members may be able to explain.
Perhaps something else to try for those that think they are not getting the speeds they should?

Got my new Ambit 256 today and rang to get it activated. However when i loaded Firefox i got a page saying click here to activate your services. Clicking this just puts you in cage and nothing happens. Rang again and was told it is a bug so closed it and the operator closed the notice on my account. Bingo it works a treat now and getting a proper speed.

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

To be honest I think the best method of getting a truthful result on the download speed is to download the blueyonder game files, downloading 2 different files at the same time is preferred then just double the transfer speed and that total will be the current download speed.

As for the browsers, have noticed that when I use I.E6 with no proxy I get my normal M package speed, when using Firefox with no proxy I get slightly less speed.

Internet speed is the subject for debate on Sky news just now, I was slightly confused as to why it wasn't reported that using a proxy can often effect the speeds, and I can vouch for that after doing various tests with or without proxy.

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

Hey guys,

I'd like to ask a question hopefully someone here may be able to answer- I apologise if it's already been asked but searching through sixty odd pages of discussion isn't my ideal way of spending an afternoon! XD

I live in Grimsby, UK, and apparently my Internet has also been upgraded to 10MB. I received many emails from Virgin touting their new fantastic speeds, downloading songs in 5 seconds, videos in 25 seconds etc. I haven't noticed any difference in speed however, and can tell my Internet is not 10MB as whenever I attempt to connect to the Internet via my PS3 or Xbox Live I'm suddenly timing out on my computer.

I thought it could be my Modem box, as I still have an old gray NTL one with green lights on the front. Anyway, I decided to run a Speed Test and sure enough, my download speed was 2.8MB, nowhere near 10MB. I phoned Virgin up and they told me I was doing something wrong, and that I was defiantly on 10MB. The lady on the phone decided to run a speed test on my connection, quickly taking back what she said about me doing something wrong, telling me I was still on 2MB.

Apparently there's a 'fault' in the Grimsby area where no-body can access 10MB. They say they're 'fixing it', though I highly doubt they're in any rush. Does anyone here have any idea when we might be able to see 10MB speeds in the Grimsby area? It would be nice to have a 10MB connection after all the bloody emails they've sent me saying I have one and how out of this world it is. Thanks!

lightning89,

Can't see any issues in your area on the services section, that doesn't mean to say these isn't though, but something as wide spread as this for an area you would think would get a mention in the service fault section for East Yorkshire & Lincolnshire, have I got the right area there? lol

Hey VMboy, yeah you're looking at the right area! We're in North East Lincolnshire. I thought it was probably something wrong with our box- a good deal of people I know have had new boxes sent round by Virgin after the upgrade was put into play.

We on the other hand still have one of these: http://media.photobucket.com/image/N...Home310510.jpg (image from Google.)

I've no idea if it's effecting it, and the woman on the phone just told me it was a widespread 'fault.' She didn't really say what the fault was and how long it'd be until it was fixed, mind you. Sounded a bit to me like she was fobbing us off.
