From what I remember speed was running at around 430kbps.

Try at different periods of the day, and if you find the speed is the same, then you may need to get VM to check things out. Hope this helps. ;) |
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
It's been over a week since I recieved my "You've been upgraded" email, speed is still 2Mb M
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2009/07/57.png I have been using https://mysso.virginmedia.com daily to check if my package has changed but today I received "The system we use to check your username and password is currently unavailable. Please try again later." and now "Invalid email/password. Please remember passwords are case-sensitive. If your caps-lock is on this may cause you to enter your password incorrectly." I am seriously considering canceling my contract with VM as I have no desire to sit for a morning chatting to an indian call center to get this problem sorted. I live in Leeds and even people that didnt register for the new speeds have been upgraded in my area! EDIT: Just checked my username and password by logging into webmail with the account and that works. |
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
vicisoux, Just a thought as I don't know whether this is relevant for this round of upgrades but have you unplugged your modem as when my service was upgraded last year I needed to do that before the 10Mb came through.

The other thing you could consider if you don't want to phone customer services is to raise a query on Virgin Media Newsgroups which are staffed by VM techs.
Details on how to set up the newsgroups can be found here:- http://www.virginmedia.com/myvirginm...setting-up.php ....and you need the newsgroup:- virginmedia.support.broadband.cable |

Our apologies for this." I guess this could be the same reason I cant access https://mysso.virginmedia.com/ |
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
I've been upgraded overnight and ahead of schedule.I only just found out because it took only 7 minutes to download the last episode of Torchwood which it was going to take 2 hours last time I attempted to do so.
So summat to be happy about...:D |

I don't know what the difference in the number of upgrades that are being handled this time as opposed to last years 4>10Mb upgrade, but, it sure looks like VM are doing these upgrades in a shorter time frame this year. |

Just I was told by the VM web site I needed to upgrade the grey modem, but when I chatted with India CS they cancelled the new modem as they told me the grey modem supports the new speed. So I found the Newgroup support and asked their advice, who told me that the grey modems dont support the 10MB speed and sent me a new modem which is working fully. Hope this helps as the Support on the newsgroup is brilliant as they reply very quickly and will help you all the way. |

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
Anyone in Swindon actually got the upgrade?
I registered for the upgrade right at the start. The timetable says Swindon has now been done, didn't say this a few days ago. http://www.virginmedia.com/myvirginm.../timetable.php So I excitedly re-booted my modem... Speed tests still spot on for 2Mb, as they have always been. The "my virgin media" page says 2Mb M and the modem status says: Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 2148000 bps So despite the timetable saying it's done, I'm still on 2Mb in every way! |

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
Virgin/NTL and this thread says that speedests are not a true reflection of performance saying the best test is to download a couple of game files.
Ive done exactly that and find that with a couple of game files downloading my speed is 110 KBps which is less than 1MB on my 2MB connection which is how it feels to me. The above speedtest might come out better sometimes but is pointless as it takes about 15 seconds before it runs and recently it doesnt run at all but the arrow says it is with endless lag spikes and pings look very muck like an overloaded network. Instead of the needle showing a steady speed it is like a rev counter up and down then peaking at the end of the test at the maximum speed in other words useless. John S. |
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
i found out i got upgraded yesterday but my speed is roughly the same as it always was although the upload speed has doubled, i did try downloading a game demo from virgin like was mentioned in another post and i am getting roughly 380KBps.
i am using the old ntl 120 silver modem and am in area 31, am i getting these speeds because of my old modem? https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2009/07/53.png |

My upgrade happened this week - I was testing a wireless adaptor and the speed test went haywire (I thought) with a speed of 9.5 Meg. Since then, I get odd flashes of 8/9 Megs but normally around 2/3 and sometimes as low as 500KB/s!

I am in Harrogate HG3 and I seem to have now been upgraded. According to tests on sites like speed.io, I am now getting between 5 and 8MB. Internet browsing doesn't seem any quicker though. When I registered I was told I needed a new modem which hasn't come yet so hopefully it will be on its way soon. I have the blue modem, Maximum Downstream Data Rate shows as 10242000, Maximum Upstream Data Rate shows as 514000

the blue modems (ambit 250s) are all good for 10Mbit. I'm sure i read somewhere they are good for up to 38Mbit although i cant back this up. I'm sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong

If they have been upgraded it is possible there is a fault on your account and the easiest way to resolve this is via the newsgroup as you will probably get more joy than phoning them. You can do this by setting a newsgroup account up in a programme such as windows live mail. The account setting you need is news.virginmedia.com and then subscribe to virginmedia.support.broadband.cable |

Anyway, this was the reply in the newsgroups: I have configured it for the 10 meg now please run the test again and let us know how you get on. The modem you have should be fine with the 10 meg. Strange how some people get told the ntl 120 will need replacing, other get told it will be fine. Did some speed tests yesterday evening, and just done one this morning, and getting 5Mb: https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2009/07/30.png It's almost constantly that speed on any speed test, and if I'm wireless or directly connected to the modem. Did manage to post this back on the newsgroups last night before the power went. Wait to see what they say. |
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

My speed has been substantially less than 10mb:

Can I offer an observation which I have noticed today which may, or may not, help those that are not seeing full speeds on test. I have both IE6 and Firefox 3.0..10. on my PC. Using speedtest.net I am constantly showing results of 5-6mb in IE6. Using Firefox I am always getting more than 9.5mb, and sometime going over 10.
I do not pretend to understand if there is a valid reason for these results, maybe there is a difference in the way the browsers work? Perhaps one of the more technical members may be able to explain. Perhaps something else to try for those that think they are not getting the speeds they should? |
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
Got my new Ambit 256 today and rang to get it activated. However when i loaded Firefox i got a page saying click here to activate your services. Clicking this just puts you in cage and nothing happens. Rang again and was told it is a bug so closed it and the operator closed the notice on my account. Bingo it works a treat now and getting a proper speed.

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
To be honest I think the best method of getting a truthful result on the download speed is to download the blueyonder game files, downloading 2 different files at the same time is preferred then just double the transfer speed and that total will be the current download speed.
As for the browsers, have noticed that when I use I.E6 with no proxy I get my normal M package speed, when using Firefox with no proxy I get slightly less speed. Internet speed is the subject for debate on Sky news just now, I was slightly confused as to why it wasn't reported that using a proxy can often effect the speeds, and I can vouch for that after doing various tests with or without proxy. |
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
Hey guys,
I'd like to ask a question hopefully someone here may be able to answer- I apologise if it's already been asked but searching through sixty odd pages of discussion isn't my ideal way of spending an afternoon! XD I live in Grimsby, UK, and apparently my Internet has also been upgraded to 10MB. I received many emails from Virgin touting their new fantastic speeds, downloading songs in 5 seconds, videos in 25 seconds etc. I haven't noticed any difference in speed however, and can tell my Internet is not 10MB as whenever I attempt to connect to the Internet via my PS3 or Xbox Live I'm suddenly timing out on my computer. I thought it could be my Modem box, as I still have an old gray NTL one with green lights on the front. Anyway, I decided to run a Speed Test and sure enough, my download speed was 2.8MB, nowhere near 10MB. I phoned Virgin up and they told me I was doing something wrong, and that I was defiantly on 10MB. The lady on the phone decided to run a speed test on my connection, quickly taking back what she said about me doing something wrong, telling me I was still on 2MB. Apparently there's a 'fault' in the Grimsby area where no-body can access 10MB. They say they're 'fixing it', though I highly doubt they're in any rush. Does anyone here have any idea when we might be able to see 10MB speeds in the Grimsby area? It would be nice to have a 10MB connection after all the bloody emails they've sent me saying I have one and how out of this world it is. Thanks! |
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
lightning89,
Can't see any issues in your area on the services section, that doesn't mean to say these isn't though, but something as wide spread as this for an area you would think would get a mention in the service fault section for East Yorkshire & Lincolnshire, have I got the right area there? lol |

We on the other hand still have one of these: http://media.photobucket.com/image/N...Home310510.jpg (image from Google.) I've no idea if it's effecting it, and the woman on the phone just told me it was a widespread 'fault.' She didn't really say what the fault was and how long it'd be until it was fixed, mind you. Sounded a bit to me like she was fobbing us off. |
