Wish they hadn't bothered upgrading mine from 4 to 10mb.
Ever since the net just hangs for 10 min every 5 mins.
Totally pee'd off here.
CS tell me there is wiring work going on & to stick with it.
Will be getting ADSL in if things dont improve by next week.

Got the upgrade here on the Lewisham part of the Bromley headend... but beautifully, much like when I had 20Mbps, I'm still topping out at 3.6Mbps downstream and 360kbps upstream. It's pointless me paying any more, I never get any more bandwidth!

for all the guys be patient, I got upgraded to 10mb for free in South East area last month, I got what they said I would, sometimes even 12mb. Amazing, just upgraded to 20mb and i get 22 mb now. Virgin Media are doing their best you know, i still prefer Virgin Media over BT, AOL, Tiscali, any day. Along with the new FIREFOX 3, im experiencing internet at its best, all i need now is a new pc unit and im happy, cant wait till christmas. lol

Anyone in TS17 got the 4 > 10mb? Mine's still on 4mb and I've rebooted the CM a few times. (BTW, it is a Surfboard 4100).
The VM website says Middlesbrough, Stockton areas are complete and there are a couple of recent posts in this thread from Middlesbrough users confirming 10Mb upgrade but I don't seem to be getting any of it :( . So I don't know if it is me or they haven't in fact got round to all TS postcode areas.

The surfboard 4100 doesn't show download/upload bandwidth limits in the configuration menus. There isn't anything obvious to me in the log but I've just rebooted it now, it's still running at 4mb, and here is the log for during reboot (top line is latest)....

Have you checked in your modem config to check that your modem has the 10Mb/s file loaded.. Also, what modem model do you have?

The only encouraging thing I can point to is, all but one area with june set as the upgrade period have been upgraded, therefore the areas with TBC written aside them will certainly get a july/august period written by its side.
Hopefully I'm right :).

It is a free call from Virgin landline on 151 so give them a call.

Being in SE9 I think I am in the same area as you. Using my usual WirelessG connection I am getting at best 5+Mb Download but, when connected with wire, tests (speedtest.net & cableforum) show 9+Mb. Perhaps it's time for a wireless upgrade.

Can anyone say that the 'N' standard products are worth buying yet?

No definitely Wireless G Only. For what it is worth, when doing the wired test I connected via the Wireless Router's ports rather than directly to the cable modem. I have just run a couple of CableForum speedtests now and got 4.8ish Mb results (wireless).

How far are you sitting from the router? Have you tried a speedtest by the router? Have you tried changing the channel on the wireless, this can sometimes sort out speed problems.

In theory it should, but in practise it's often not the case.

If there are a lot of wireless networks near you, try and move to the least used channel (remembering the only fully seperate bands are 1, 6 and 11). The other thing to do is take a look around the house at what wireless equipment you have (phones, TV senders, etc) - if you've still got manuals, then maybe check the frequencies they run at and make sure there isn't an overlap. It can take a little bit of time but can make a difference.

Also, how many machines do you have sharing your wireless LAN? Remember that (best case) you're essentially looking at having half of the indicated bandwidth available and that divided among the machines connected. For example, if the adapter indicates it's connected at 54mbps then I'd only take 27 of that as maximum useful throughput. If you have 3 machines then that's a maximum of 9mbps per machine. This is all assuming perfect conditions of course!

Well, according to Wikipedia today is the first official day of summer in 2008.

According to http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html...t_service.html

all upgrades should be completed by today... oh dear... :(

Thanks for that & also the responses by Southwell & Zeph.

There are other wireless networks in the area and I recently changed channels to escape interference - this worked fine and I was consistently getting 3.9Mb in the 'old' 4Mb days.

Yes I do have cordless phones (just changed these as well) so I will check. I am not far from the router, the room above, but obviously not in line of sight but no change there.

There is another PC on the network but it was not connected when I did the speed tests.

I have rechecked my settings and the router is set to G only. However, when looking at the NICs they offer me only 2 choices for Adhoc Wireless mode - B only or B/G mix. Both cards are Linksys PCI and one is only a few months old, they are set to B/G mix. Is there a possibility that the implied presence of a B device could slug the speed even if no such device is actually on the network?

Thanks again.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

ANDOVER appears to have been upgraded, I've checked and I have the new modem configs.

Speed test results using various testers seem to be very poor and pretty random ranging from 2.5Mb/s to 6Mb/s, although a sample 60MB multi-thread download from VM newsgroups resulted in approx 1.1-1.2MB/s so proves the old NTL 120 can still hack it!!!

Hope the download settles down, I've been used to usually getting rock-solid 480KB/s, when on 4Mb, from good sources, although Newsgroups download have not been reliable since I had to change from NTL to VM newsgroup servers a couple of months ago.

Wed, 25 Jun 2008 14:17:18 UTC

Test 1: 1024K took 1643 ms = 623.3 KB/sec, approx 5136 Kbps, 5.02 Mbps

Above is a pretty typical speedtest result I am getting today , Speedtest.net was worse, but this was measured immediately after a 300MB dowload from newsgroups that ran at 1.0-1.2MB/s

What a useless speedtest site !!!!!

Why do people even bother using this when what it downloads is far too small to test anything ???
As you can see from the results above not very good is it and no it wasn't in my browser cache either

Have you rebooted your modem by unplugging the power lead?

Combine 2-4 Downloads.
Sites seam reluctant to let me a download at 10Mb/s on a single file. but Ive hit over 10Mb/s from multi apple.com HD trailers.
my top 3 in 1080p are WALL.E, Hancock and The curious case of benjamin button trailers.

I've unplugged and rebooted several times and still 4mb.

Is my STB okay for 10mb ? It is a SAMSUNG SMT-2110C.

I've just checked on the virgin media site and it says that your STB won't be able to deliver the speed. You'll have to ring them up and tell them. They'll replace it for you, with a new cable modem free of charge.

You will get 6Mb max through a Samsung STB, you need to call Tech Support on 151 to sort out getting a Stand Alone Cable Modem.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

Assuming six areas a month are upgraded, unless Virgin speed up, then that leaves three more months after July until everyone's upgraded. So fits in with previous, end of September, estimate.

The finish date is for the end of the 3rd quarter of the year so supposedly finished by October.

Here in Poole with my splendid new modem, rebooted and router re-educated, I'm getting about 9Mbps on average, at peak time too!
Excellent!

Can't believe we are still TBC, but I suppose someone has to be last.

My modem was going absolutely haywire the other day, connection stopped syncing and on the modem status page the speed was going up and down (from 1mb to 40mb) without syncing. I assumed that this was because they were up to something, but alas it looks like they aren't.

Don't hold your breath when you do get the upgrade ,I had a better stable speed when I was still on 4 mb service ,occasionally you do get a good speed but most of the time I'm lucky if I get much more than 5 mb some upgrade this has been ,the only + side is the upload speed has gone from 44k up to 60 k ,marketing ploy for bad service "Free upgrade from 4 mb to 10 mb " don't make me laugh Virgin :td:

Must admit I'll be interested to see how that falls out here where we are - that's the thing I was always a bit worried about given the number of people complaining about a stable 10 meg connection being turned into an awful 20 meg connection.

I'm optimistic though as I've never heard of any utilisation problems off of Hayes (ha! famous last words!).
