When I rang CS they asked for my account number or Ntl phone number.

I believe Customer Service has not been outsourced to Indian so you're safe as long as you aren't calling Technical Support.

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)

The other day I called up and arranged for a Samsung box to be installed, however, this can't be done until 26th April. I just called CS to see if they could reduce me to the 1Mb tier for a month while I wait for my new STB. The lady on the phone discussed this with her manager and came back and told me that although it was possible to upgrade my box to 1Mbit this was causing more problems than it was worth. Fair enough, I thought, so I proceeded to ask if I could pay £17.99 for a month until I get my Samsung box and she told me to get lost as I am currently receiving the service I signed up for. :( So if I had a SACM they would have still refuse to drop me down to the 1Mbit £17.99 tier? I don't think so... I thought this was a bit out of order but seeing as it only affects me for a month I can live with it.

I'm going to try and call them again tonight, what should my approach be?

1) Try and speak to same CS Rep again (I have her extention)
2) Talk to someone else

And then do I

1) Try and get the samsung I've been offered or
2) See if they'll update my Pace to the 1meg rate because the last CS Rep was daft?

Quick Question.. I hope I wont have to read 100+ posts a day being Subscribed to this thread :D

Upload with 2MB.
Any Limits? 300MB limit was on old 750kb? Or is all Upload & Download counted in 1GB a day???

Cheers ;)

If you're not bothered whether it's a Pace or Samsung for tv, why not try asking for a SACM?

Or will (anybody can answer this for me :)) they not let you change from a stb to sacm?

Not if it's not needed - where's the financial sense in supplying a customer with two pieces of hardware (stb and sacm), when an stb will do both?

I have still not recieved my upgrade.

I rang ntl, got it done by customer service, though, brilliant, that was quick and easy.

nothing for over a week..

ring again.. im told that my connection status is set to 2mb, and they dont know why iit isnt showing it my end, and transfer me to the tech support poeple, except they send me through to TV tech support, who can neither help me, nor transfer me to broadband tech support

ring again, get told that the upgrades arent happening yet and that I should wait for it to be automaticaly upgraded, ask to be transfered to tech support, get through to someone in india who cant help, but wont transfer me through to the tech support in the uk and instead sends me back to customer service..

customer service cant transfer me to a uk tech support person either (why the hell not?) but says he will get someone from tech support to call me back..

so, thats me with yet another huge mobile bill, and spending 30mins standing in a **** smelling phonebox which is 10mins walk from home, to get absoutly nowhere..

can anyone tell me where the hell the uk based broadband tech support is and how I contact them? please? according to customer service i got serveral answers (there isnt one, its in swansea, its in coventry) but still the same overall result (we cant transfer you, or give you a number for them, you have to ring india)

What the hell? last time I had a problem it took me hours of phonecalls and I eventualy got through to someone who told me he was in swansea(iirc) and fixed everything in 10mins, so why all this hassle when someone who is quite blatently not doing anything else (as nobody can get through to him) could just fix things quickly?

Why can't you just be patient and wait for it to happen automatically? The upgrades will happen in the next month or so. Ringing up multiple times just to get the answer you want to hear is not helping you or any other customer trying to get through.

Hi,

Could someone possibly confirm the rough download speed I should be achieving on a 1mb connection. I have just been upgraded from the 300k service and am a little confused by kb/s as opposed to KB/s :dunce:

I used the speed test page posted in this thread and average speed is 1049 kbits/sec. If thats about right for a 1mb connection then i'm happy, but I just wanted to make sure.

Many thanks

why can't I get upgraded and everyone else can though?

Im not being greedy and wanting to download things, i just want a better upload connection so that I can play xbox live comfortably, why should I pay £25 a month for an inferior connection to other people paying the same price?

and I call on a mobile because I dont have a landline (no need for one usualy) and I dont have any friends that live near by (i live i a house with 6 of my friends)

That is as it should be :)

The 1meg service should provide you around 1024kilobits (kbs) per second, and this equates to 128kilobytes (kBs)- however you will see slightly lower speeds than this when downloading because of overheads.

Hey Mal,

The point is more that I shouldn't need an engineer visit at all - as OB says, from a financial point of view it doesn't make sense to send an engineer out, give me a brand new box, or a SACM, when my current set up will work absolutely fine... and from my point of view taking the inevitable day (or two depending on whether they make it or not) off isn't the most fun :(

Didn't get the chance to call them yesterday (for their callback...), will try today...

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)

Oh dear, I knew it would all go pete tong. There I was quite happy with my 1mb service working fine, just waiting for the engineer to come on 4th Arpil to fit my samsung and upgrade to 2mb.... Well, sods law kicked in last night. Pace STB has fried. Fubar, just showing 8888 on the display.

So called faults and they will get an engineer out on Thursday AM. Likelyhood of me having TV service by Friday ? 50-50 ? Likelyhood of having a broadband service over the easter weekend ? <20% ?

On the plus side I may get my samsung earlier than 4th April, but knowing NTL more likely I get another Pace.

:erm: It was only a suggestion  You don't have to do it...

Well seen as that you will need a new box, the expense of the engineer will be there, whether or not it's going to be a new SACM (and you keep the pace box for the tv) or a new Samsung they install. There's going to be something "new" i.e. expense, there, either way.

Could someone confirm whether I'm correct?

Anyway, I've decided to drop down to 1Mb until all the fuss dies down but after another call to CS I've been told I can't even do that until 4th April! Are they picking on me?

Hi! New to the forum today tho' lurking for a while. :)

I too live in SE London and rang CS this am (the latest of several calls over the last 2 weeks) to try and get a date to replace PACE STB with a SAMSUNG and was given the SAMSUNG doesn't work in your area ring Sales to get an SACM story this time.

I can't believe cabling is an issue as I believe upgrades were done in this area just over a year ago so that we could be offered BB. Is there anybody on the forum who lives in SE London and has BB working via a SAMSUNG STB?

I would prefer a replacement STB just to be rid of the pesky PACE. I'm not asking for it to be installed yesterday or today, all I want is a date for when the job will be done so no need for CS to make up stories if the real issue is a shortage of SAMSUNGS.

My sentiments exactly. I'm going to play a waiting game after I downgrade to 1Mb and once all the fuss has died down I'll try to get a Samsung box.

I suspect that since none of the things that the Samsung is supposed to be better at e.g. Interactive, VOD etc. are not likely to be available in our area anytime soon NTL don't want to waste a Samsung box on us and have therefore come up with the 'You must have a Cable Modem' BS.

I know this question has probably be asked before but there is 60+ pages to trawl through - so please don't shout at me - I have a stand alone cable modem and am in the Welwyn Garden area - is it easy enough to upgrade my speed - I am currently on 1.5 mb

welwynrose:

If you use a stand alone cable modem you can upgrade using the following link:

https://autoreg.autoregister.net/cgi..._tiermigration

If you are using a Set top box for your broadband acess you need to call NTL (0800 052 2000) and selection option 5.

Bit of a result. Although my STB seemed totally dead yesterday showing 8888 on the display, when I got home last night, it was showing Err1. So I rebooted and it said it was doing a software update. It then sprung back to life. TV and broadband back in action. :D

I checked the diags screen and at 11.am it received some sort of update, then 11.07 decided it had a loader CRC failure. Reboot at 19:08 CM operational. etc. back in business.

So, just cancelled my engineer visit tomorrow and back to 4th april for the Samsung upgrade. With a bit of luck.

Followed the link to upgrade SACM, claims to have upgraded me to 2MB but speed tests only give results indicating 750K. I have rebooted the modem but no change.

A second visit to the upgrade site tells me that my current speed is 2MB!

Anyone else had this? Is there a solution?

Cheers

Seems to be a delay before upgrade is sent to modem.

I've got a problem with the online speed upgrade page.

It validates the login details fine, and also detects the cm as well, but then it throws the following error at me: "Unable to lookup cable modem xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx (RecordNotFound in page checkCM.)" (I've xx'ed the mac address)

Any suggestions? (I'm currently on the 750k cm service in renfrew)

This thread is solely for discussion about the new speed upgrades - it isn't for discussing whether ntl is better than BT or vice versa.*

If you want to discuss ntl vs BT etc., you could create a new thread, best place is probably here: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/forumdisplay.php?f=63

* Well, OK, unless you're asking who now has the fastest speeds out of ntl & other ISPs, in which case ask away.

After reading about the upgrades, it looks like I have one of the old boxes and can't get the 2mb unless we change the box. However, the set top box belongs to my parents, and I'm not sure I'm going to be able to convince them to change the box. I forsee an argument along the lines of "The television is fine, why should we?". Can anyone tell me how much hassle would be involved in changing over to a cable modem? Are NTL likely to try to discourage it, what sort of wiring/cabling might be involved, any costs? I'm wondering if it might be worth just doing that if I can.

Your parents won't lose anything by swapping the box but you can argue the point that it is more reliable/ stable than the Pace units and it's a nice shiny silver unit that looks a lot nicer than the old STBs. As for getting a SACM put in, unless there is a problem with the STB NTL will normally refuse to install a SACM as the Set Top Box is there to provide the broadband feed.
All that is involved in the swap is the old STB is unplugged and the new one is connected in it's place, it doesn't take long and rarely involves any problem for the customer :)

Keep an eye on your bills when they arrive.

I just got mine and they charged me for the 750KB and 2MB services for the same month AND and an extra amount for the 2MB service I had in the last month.

They overcharged me by £36 in total !!

All that is involved in the swap is the old STB is unplugged and the new one is connected in it's place, it doesn't take long and rarely involves any problem for the customer :)

Actually you do lose something - the audio out connectors are not provided on the Samsung unit, which means my Home Theatre has no direct feed at the moment.

They credited back what I'd paid under 750k since the date of my upgrade, then charged me for the same period, marked as 2mb. So there was nothing extra. I just presumed that, that was the way that they had to show the change.

I'll wait to see what happens next month.

Thanks for the reply, Paul. I'll certainly try and put the case for the new box - my parents are always complaining about having to reset the box (usually on a Saturday night for some reason) so that should give me some ammunition! I prefer to keep using the box rather than a cable modem anyway, it's so much simpler.

Hello,

I know this is nothing to do with speed, but I wonder if anyone can give me some advice.

I have the ntl:120 modem and have aquired a new ntl:250 modem, have plugged the new one in and disconnected the old one all the lights work and shows a good connection, but I am unable to acces the internet or email.

Does the mac address of the new modem have to be registered before the modem can work.

Thanks for your help!

How did you aquire the new modem? If it was through a swap out the modem should work once the engineer finishes fitting it but occassionally there are cases where you have to register the modem. Give CS a call and I'm sure they will sort it out for you.

Can always give CS a call, they may be able to sort it out as you wait, if not then it's wait and see but it shouldn't be a long wait.

if i upgrade from 750 to 2M i assume I will need a new STB. How long does it take - I guess I will have to take time off work to wait for the engineer to drop the new STB off and take all of 60 seconds to swap the boxes around??

you guess right , ring them up and make yourself as available as you can and then you should get a new box as soon as they can make one available for you :)

Apologies for quoting myself!

My 750k service through my Pace STB stopped working about 20 minutes ago.

After a reboot I ran IE and got the provisioning page and re-entered my details.

A quick speed check confirms I'm now on 1Mb even though CS had previously told me I'd have to wait until 4th April.

Although I'm still not happy about not being able to get 2Mb without having a Cable Modem (see #857 in this thread) I have to say well done NTL!

Better change my profile! :)

Has anyone been having problems with upload speeds since the upgrade? I am on 3Mb service (Salford area) and since I have been getting an average 40 kilobits per second rather than the 300 or so I should be getting on uploads. Downloads speeds have been fine but uploads have been really flakey.

I have also tried this on 3 different PC's now so I am sure it's not my system, but NTL tech support think everything at thier end is OK.

I understand that NTL supply "up to 300 kilobits" but it is rare I hit over 100 and then it's like the connection just drops.

Thanks in advance.

No idea, but I'd have thought that it would have been done by now.

Do you have a...non-standard....tariff in any way? e.g. the XBox/PS2 two IP service, or Broadband Plus? If so, perhaps that's why the online upgrade isn't working [I've seen posts by other people with those extras, who've had to phone as the online upgrade won't work for them]

I'd just phone CS if I were you, otherwise you could be waiting even longer.

Hi,
I am on the 750K service via a Pace STB. I am upgrading to the 2M service FOC. I have an appointment for the 4th April for an engineer to call and replace my Pace STB for a Samsung unit. All well so far.
My question is this: Should I not be running at 1M now and then 2M when the new STB is fitted or is it normal to be still at 750K until the new STB arrives then one jump to 2M ?

Thanks.

Hi Wallace :), i had the exact same upgrade requirements as yourself. They won't upgrade you to 1mb just for the few days until they deliver & set up your NEW Pace box for TV for you.

Read my installation experience on page 59 of this thread, i'm sure it will enlighten you to a few things you will need to do once your box is installed.

I think you will be surprised it's not quite as simple as it may seem. Hope this helps.

Yours

Hello,

I live in the Leamington Spa Area (CV32), upgraded this morning via the website to 3mb, was formally on 1.5mb. Have run some speed tests and the results don't seem right.

Before Download was approx. 1492kps, upload was approx 256kps
Now Download is approx. 60kps, and upload is 229kps.

I've power cylced my NTL CM and run the same tests again but the results are still constant

Before I go wasting half my day on the phone to NTL is there anything else I should be looking for or trying?

Thanks

Just spent an hour on the phone to a CS, to cut a long story short after doing a load of speed tests to confirm speeds, NTL have moved me onto a different UBR. Whilst this has made the tests go quicker the response times are still way below what I'm paying for, the supervisor said that he'll look into it, however he did caveat NTL by stating that there are migration issues and as a result some users speeds are not correct  , given time they should be ok.

We'll see shall we, if they don't improve then i'll can my Cable, Broadband and Phone and take my business elsewhere. :Yikes:

Oh & sorry to you as well castlekeep :)

Hi Stan,

No need to appologise.

I did phone CS in the end.
The Guy on the phone appeared to know what to do and advised me that two hours later my speed will be 3Mb. Well four hours later and after rebooting the STB many times the speed was still 1.5Mb.
However 6 hours later and I lost all my broadband access and the STB log displayed QOS=no-bia.cm. At this point CS was closed.
I phoned CS this morning and another Guy spend 1/2 hour sorting out the mess and eventually I got my broadband access back with 3Mb speed. :)

Thanks for everyones advice.

Phil.

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)

Hmmm. Well I just tried the website speed upgrade and it tells me "Error looking up cable modem details". From looking at this thread I take it that it is because I am not on the normal setup, but on the £20 a month, bought the modem originally offer.

So I phone up the support line indicated on the error page, and get through to Hindi ("tell me to slow down if I talk too fast sir"). I tell her the problem and she says (in a formulaic reading off the page kinda way) "Customer services will upgrade you in due time. Just wait for the upgrade".

Hmmmm. Does this mean they haven't upgraded my area (Bracknell/ Reading), or have I phoned one of the go by the rulebook lot?

If it's the second option, then does anyone know how to get through to that infamous friendly scottish lady directly? There would be a virtual pint in it for you... :)

Cheers

Phone Customer Services (0800 052 2000) rather than Tech Support. The line shuts at 8pm.

AFAIK, you should be able to keep the £5 discount you got from buying your own modem - but only if you don't change actual tiers, i.e. if you simply upgrade from your current 750k to the 2meg service, you continue paying £20/month, as 2meg is the replacement for the 750k service, same price. But if you went up to the new 3meg service (normally £38/month) you'd lose the £5 discount. I think. Phone & check.
