[Merged] Virgin Media Newsgroups Changes

I am getting 440 error message - posting not allowed - when I try to post a messages to a newsgroup. There is nothing at the VM website on this. Is anyone else having the same problem, or can shed any light please ? I live in the Norwich area.

Re: 440 error posting to newsgroups

This message posted to all newsgroups today probably explains things

Quote:
Subject: IMPORTANT! THIS NEWS SERVER IS CLOSED - PLEASE READ - 08/05/2008 11:41:21

Hi all,

This news server is now closed this means no new posts will be made
available on this server or any of it's aliases such as news.ntlworld.com,
news.virgin.net, news.cable.ntlworld.com, news.ntli.com etc

This is because we have migrated to a new binary news server
news.virginmedia.com The new binary server offers many more groups, allows
unlimited connections and articles are kept for longer. Please create a new
account in your news reader pointing to news.virginmedia.com now.

How do I set it up?

If you're an Outlook Express user, follow the instructions at
http://www.virginmedia.com/customers...ress-exntl.php
but at step 6 enter news.virginmedia.com instead of the old server name.
Remember that you can only access the service when you're on a Virgin Media
Internet connection.

Please ensure that you DO NOT enter any username and password details
for this server. This would prevent you from accessing the server.

If you have problems

If you have any issues please connect to the news text server
text.news.virginmedia.com and post to the virginmedia.support.usenet group

What's happening to the Text server?

At this point we're not making any changes to the text server and it will
continue to be available at text.news.virginmedia.com

Virgin Media
So basically change your news server to news.virginmedia.com and redownload the list of newsgroups so you have an up-to-date list, and you're all set.

Re: 440 error posting to newsgroups

Thanks. I eventually found a message on virginmedia.announce.internet that the newsgroup servers had changed.

I think VM should have made this more prominent. I'm also annoyed that I sent VM a query on their website and got a reply that I should call them on a premium-rate number ! Are VM trying to get rid of their customers ?

John

Re: Newsgroups Important Announcement

Make sure that no login is required or that the username and password is blank for the server. It's working for me using 'Agent' newsreader.

I do not recall seeing the message on any of the uk.xxx groups I subscribe to, but I perhaps they were and I did not notice. Perhaps an email to everyone would have been in order ?

Re: 440 error posting to newsgroups

Not everyone has e-mail with Virgin (or uses it if they do). Also can you imagine the confusion if everyone who don't use the newsgroups had an e-mail about the change?

Re: [Merged] Virgin Media Newsgroups Changes

at least 7 days for binary articles, 90 days for text articles and 120 for Virgin posts

Re: [Merged] Virgin Media Newsgroups Changes

They just took the best bits of the NTL and TW-BY* models. NTL had a higher retention (around 9 days) to TW-BY 3 days. It`s now 7 days. TW-BY had more groups available which have now become available to the exNTLers.

*Not sure if TW and BY were the same spec. but you get the drift.
