I really hope something is done about this and this judge never sit for a rape trial again

Five people in Tameside have been arrested on suspicion of fraud offences, police say.

It follows the local elections in England earlier this month.

The five people – four men and a woman aged between 23 and 47 – were arrested at addresses in Tameside this morning, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has announced.

They remain in custody.

The force says that it received reports surrounding concerns about candidates within St Peter's ward in the days up to and following the election on 7 May.

GMP adds that it is investigating the process of how candidates were put forward and represented in the ward, and if this adhered to the relevant legislation and electoral procedures.

Officers are working closely with the Electoral Commission and local partners, they add.
