I got one!!!!

It's a thing of beauty, and the new ones with the touch-sensitive controls and the docking cradle for syncing with your Mac are just dee-lish-us.

Sadly I bought mine when they were not long out so it has a mere 5gb, but having said that I've yet to get bored with the several hundred tracks I have on it.

I got it at a kind of upmarket gadget shop in Glasgow which has since closed down. AFAIK Apple control prices of their stuff quite tightly so I don't know what success you might have finding a deal anywhere.

John Lewis department stores are Apple resellers so they'll sell you one. It's always good to buy from them if you can as they will price match in the unlikely event you find it cheaper elsewhere. Their aftersales service is good if/when things go wrong too.

I bought my iMac at the one in Watford.

You could always phone ahead ...

And yes, 15gb would be masses, especially as you can now encode in AAC format (higher quality, smaller files), provided you've downloaded iTunes 3.

There is a 15gb model BTW. Full details here:

No I don't have one :(

I really ought to try to save up for one as they're just so bloody useful, not just as an MP3/MP4 player. Want to have a bootable system backup? Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your system to your iPod. Want to keep your porn collection hidden from your wife? Keep them on your iPod (and yes, I have a friend who does just this :D ).

I don't think it's not EU wide, it only seems to apply to France because of their domestic laws.

I wouldn't be too worried, even if you do have a capped player, 100db should be plenty of volume...

from ipod lounge

Warning: Don't buy an European iPod, it's volume is too low
The NEW iPods do have the volume cap that was introduced in the iPod firmware back to version 1.2.x already built into them. But Apple seems to have overdone it: the European iPod's max-volume is so low, that you can't use your iPod in crowded places like a subway or bus. You simply can't hear the music at an efficient level! According to user's tests the volume is about 25-30% lower then with the US version.

But not only the headphone jack is capped, also the line out: That means, that if you connect your iPod to a stereo at home or in the car, you have to turn the volume of that stereo way up what in many cases is causing sound-distortions.

Fortunately I got mine a couple of years ago, so it is unadulterated (unlike my ears, must be all that loud music :D )
