Hi all

I have had the same phone for years, own it and just pay for the calls.

However itâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s getting a bit worn and I want to replace itâ₠¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¦..What I am after is a phone really just to use in emergencies maybe 3 calls a week.

Any recommendations on networks /tariffs?

Thanks

3 probably have the best offer at the moment, £35 per month gives you 750 cross network anytime minutes, they also do 500 minutes for £25. At the moment they are offering the 500 minute deal at half price line rental for 3 months, so that's £17.50. Coverage is pretty good and when you go out of their range you automatically default to the o2 network. Their current offer gives you the Motorola A835 with a free bluetooth headset.

Just a word of warning though - 3's customer service is absolutely diabolical....

Something tells me he is looking for a slightly simpler & cheaper solution!

What's simpler than that? Free phone and bluetooth headset and 500 cross network minutes per month all for £25, which is reduced to £17.50 for the first 3 months - easy!

Vodafone do a Nokia 3410 Pay As You Go for £50

edit: To Russ, as the OP states he only makes 3 calls a week or so, Pay As You Go might be considerably cheaper?

If you read his post you'll see he has been on a payg tariff and it doesn't look like he is a particularly high user as he says he only wants to make 2 or 3 emergency calls a week. I think a full £35 per month cross network tariff might be a bit of overkill.

...which is why I recommended the tarrif which is £17.50 for the first 3 months :)

Orange have some good low user tarif's though TBH if you only use the phone for emergencys you may be better off just buying a new phone !

But if he would get a PAYG (say the Nokia at £50), he would start saving money after three/four months if he only makes a few calls a week...

Yeah, I saw that, and personally I might be interested in this kind of deal when I renew later in the year, but he's not going to be too chuffed about the other 9 months at £35. :) I think a 60 or 120 minutes tariff might be better for him if he wants to go the contract way, but I reckon payg will be the best option for him. If he doesn't make any calls one month he will have wasted his money.

I use the carphone warehouse network. It piggybacks t mobile. They have good tarrifs too. My last monthly bill was £2.86. Very clever way of payg, sign up and it goes direct debit. Their network is called fresh.
