are you just looking for speakers & amp, or a dvd player too?

For £400 i'd go for the Sony or Panasonic all in one systems

If you go for separates, you can get that Sony STRDE585 for around £200, but that only leaves you with £200 and you can't get any sort of decent set of surround speakers for £200.
This
http://www.richersounds.co.uk/index.php?f=itemdetl.php&p=davs550r2
is more in your price range.

It's probably more worth your while to save up for a while longer and go for the separates.

I totally agree...Go to Richer Sounds. I wouldn't personally bother with a Sony amp though...Don't forget to budget for Cables though...Especially speaker Cables, as with 5 to 6 of them they can take a large chunk of your budget.

If you want to run the system off your PC. It will need a soundcard with an optical output on it, to plug into the amp.

The sony's great, but a set of 5 speakers for £200 won't do it justice, keep saving!!

Well I have had for the last 3 years the Scan SC2000 DVD player now superseded by this (http://www.scan.co.uk/products/sc440lsi.htm)

Coupled with the Scan AV6 6 Speaker Theatre with Dolby and DTS.

At the time osome 3 years ago I got that for just under £400.

But if you look
AV6here (www.scan.co.uk)

The you will see even at todays prices you can pick it for £174 for the speakers etc and £73 for the DVD Player bringing it in under £250 for the lot.

The DVD has been faultless and plays anything you throw at it and no problems up to now with the AV6 speaker system.

:)

IMHO forget the run of the mill DVD players... Kiss DP-450 is the DVD player for me.

Plays ANYTHING you want to throw its way. including DivX and XviD

Hey Sony AMP is good, mine does DD 5.1/6.1 and DTS 6.1 too hehe I only got the 5 speakers. No money for Sub or extra speakers. The Speakers are Tannoy from www.hifibitz.co.uk. That is a VERY good company.... no complaint from me.

:welcome: to the forums

When you say you can't get it to work, do you mean no sound at all or no surround sound?

Surround sound depends on the transmitted signal so whether it 'works' or not is down to what exactly you're watching...

It works on DVD and TV sound works like normal,

The surround sound just does not work with the TV!

Unless you're watching a program that broadcasts surround sound (e.g certain BBC HD ones) it won't...
