microsoft has released its monthly update of patches to fix more holes, some of these were notified to microsoft 200 days ago but the company has only just decided to 'plug' the serious holes affecting all 'current' windows versions.

(M$ have known about the security hole for 6 months)

It was mentioned on Channel 4 news tonight (http://www.channel4.com/news/2004/02/week_2/11_windows.html) the patch went up for grabs last night.

I updated this morning, I also found another Critical Update which strangely changes the "swastika" character symbol in the Bookshelf font.

The Times has an interesting article (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,1-997443,00.html) about this.Microsoft is not the only company which writes bad code, but it is a target for hackers because it dominates the market.

So it does have a duty to be better than everybody else and it is failing in that duty.

This error is a stupid fault. Whoever wrote that piece of software should be mortified. It's a pathetic little mistake.

Thats terrible. The swastika goes back at least a thousand years, way before the Nazis. PC madness again :mis:

Well I did mention it earlier today, perhaps I should have put it in the sub thread. Or replied to the post from kronas. Had no problems updating though.

So is Win98SE not affected with this or does it just not get fixed?

What AD ?

You have no active directory running ????

Does that mean that you have all those machines on a workgroup

No. 60% of the servers are standalone internet servers. The rest (and the desktops) are in our NT domain (and 6 locations around the uk).

To answer the other question above - afaik W95 & W98 are not affected. There are no patches for them.

Not as bad as you would think - the patch installation is in the login script for the desktops (and the servers in the domain).

The only real pain is the standalone servers - but this is for the last time (I hope) as we are rolling out a patch management system to all servers & desktops. So next time I will load the patch and tell the system to apply it to all servers and desktops - and then sit back and watch it happen. :D

Nice one m8 - I shedule all the machines via system policy... When the user starts up in the morning - Presto / patch installed :)

Well, so far as I'm concerned, all the messages in this thread so far are completely unintelligible (which no doubt says more about me than about them, but I may be more typical, no?). There's a nasty loophole in Windows XP and some other versions that might allow a hacker to get control of your computer, so go to www.microsoft.com/security/ (http://www.microsoft.com/security/) and download and install the patch, and activate the firewall, and keep your virus definition files up to date. All the rest seems to me strictly for de boyds.

LOL - yes - there is no relationship between most of the desktops and the servers. The majority of the servers are for external web systems.

PadNot for ME, but if you are using IE as your browser, click on Tools/Windows Update and you should be able to check your patch status.

BTW.:welcome: to NTHW.

I need some help/ advice. I have two machines linked to ntl cable. Both are on own (legal) copies of XP home and all of that works fine. On one machine (happens to be the main machine) I have run the patch to get the microsoft security update. It is the other machine that gives me a problem.

When I try to run www.microsoft.com/update or the same via any of the links to the patch then I get the Windows Update page but after "checking" it always defaults to an (!) Administrators Only page, and then stops.

Looks to me as if that is the message you get when you try to do updates but do not have administrator status on the account from which you are working. However I AM working from an account that has Administrators authority. I have even changed some of the other accounts to (temporarily) have administrator authority but I always get the same result.

Any clues?

1. create a new account with admin rights....

2. Clear any cookies from your browser session.

Can allso post the windows update log located in the c:\winnt folder...

OK some progress.

The approach Xaccers gave seemed to work OK - which just PROVES that I am working from an account that DOES have admin authority.

Following Stuartbe's approach I created a new account with admin authority and then loaded the normal Update link via "tools" -- but again everything stops when the (!) Administrators Only page shows.

Cleared all the cookies etc (and all temporary files) but that made no difference.

I am perplexed about the suggestion to post the windows update log that is found in a C:\winnt folder ..... because I cannot find such a folder (and I do have tools and view set to view all folders). I would like to 'crack' this problem in order to keep Windows updated in the future. I do that regularly on the main machine but it is ages since I did it on the slave.

C:\winnt was meant to be C:\windows (in 2000 and NT it's C:\winnt)

I found a file called Windows Update in C:\windows and paste in the last couple of days entries - not in a very elegant way but I do not know another way. All totally meaningless to me but I guess the line "(Error 0x80070005: Access is denied.)" is what is needed.

It looks like windows is having problems getting the files it needs.

It may be that a firewall or add blocker of some description is causing the
problem. I sugest that you connect the cable modem directly to the pc with the problem and see if the fault persists.....

Thanks for the help.

There is McAfee firewall but that is set to allow access Microsoft Help Centre hosting server. There is no ad-blocker that I know of. Moving the cable will take some doing so I will have some coffees and think about that approach, then get back to you

Thanks again

Have you allowed the url or the ip ??? Microsoft often redirect to diff. servers ????

Does the computer that has no problems have macafee installed ?

OK, I moved the cable - made no difference.

I also disables the firewall for a minute or so and then tried again to load the Microsoft help via "tools" - still I came up with the (!) Admisnistrators Only page which seems to signify that I am not an administrator.

Answering your questions

1. Yes the computer that is giving access without problems also has McAfee installed

2. Your query about whether I have blocked the IP or the URL is getting a bit over my head. I do not fully understand all the intricacies McAfee. Anyway, since the problem persists when McAfee is 'off' I do not think the issue is important.

For the moment I have the critical patch vai the link Xaccers gave, so that makes me feel better. Issue is when I want to make future updates which I know I should be doing more regularly than at present. There is ALWAYS a way around I suppose ie I could opt to download the various patches rather than run them and download them to the flash memory stick on USB (256MB so ample room). I presume I could them move the memory stick to the slave computer and run it. Messy but I guess it will work. However, REALLY I want to fix the core problem.

It could be that you need to remove all the files from the windows update folder... See the windows update trouble shooter for info... There is one folder that you must NOT remove... Take care..

As far as I can see "Error IUCTL Library download error. Will retry. (Error 0x80070005: Access is denied.)" is a permissions problem on your machine - it has nothing to do with your access to the web site but more to do with the windows update process on your machine being denied access to a resource it needs in order to run.

You can download the updates without the need of Windows Update. Just go to the Microsoft Website and then to the Downloads centre.

- err, how do I find that out?

I have tried the Update Help (it does indeed refer to an error with the code I see in the update log file) but after trying all the options - no luck. Still I get stopped at the (!) Administrator page.

Frustrating. Think I may have to call on the guy who set my system up

Right click on the windows folder and select properties. Select the security tab and make sure that your name has all the allow ticks next to it..

No probs m8 --- Open windows explorer and find the windows folder. Right click on the folder and select properties. Select the security tab and make sure that administrators have full access to the folder. You will see two rows of options like on the pic......Mine says windows nt but yours will say windows.....

I'm not clear what you mean by "the windows folder". I don't have a 'security' tab on the 'properties' panel of my C:\windows folder, and I don't know what else you're referring to. (I don't have a problem with Windows Update, touch wood, at any rate at the moment, but I would like to check what I'm allowed to do on my own computer!)

Tks
