I don't think the older versions of Norton were compatable with XP:) I had a similar prob. I switched to McAfree but i think it was 20 quid.;)

Not sure about the older versions of Norton....

As for AVG, for what it is, it's supposed to be pretty good.

http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?avg.xml at last someone who agrees with me on this, the detection engine on this is nearly 10 years old I've seen it let some very common viruses past, seems to pickup somethings but it's unpredictability make it a very bad choice, remember most reviews that test this are done by ordinary people virus scanner need more complex testing and most reviewer are not up to the task of testing this software correctly so it does get it good reviews unfortunately

I realise that if you pay £10 a month for this and £10 a month for that, that the grand total total soon becomes ridiculous but, personally, a decent anti-virus software is the one piece of software I'm always willing to pay for to make sure that I get somthing up to date.

I use Norton AV (running under Win XP; came installed with my Dell computer). I don't know how much it would cost to buy, but it only costs me £14/year to keep it updated.

I use AVG on my XP machine with no problems, and becaue some people on .com said it sucked I scanned my PC with both NAV and McAfee and there were no virus anywhere, so AVG had done what I wanted it to:)

I just check for updates once a week, and in my paranoid moments do a scan of the system on symantec.com

I have had both Norton 2002 and 2003 running on my XP pro system no problem.

The Norton firewall has been quirky but all cool appart from that....

I found Norton conflicted with some of my hardware and replaced it with a free program called AntiVir which has worked OK so far and can be found here http://www.free-av.com/

There are also online sites like the Symantec Security check where you can test the security of your machine. The Shields Up tests at grc.com are good as are those at the PC Pitstop site and the PC flank site.

I use Agnitums's free firewall program "Ourpost" which is pretty useful.

If your machine passes all those tests it's pretty secure.
