View Full Version : Fast File Transfer between me and nextdoor
My nextdoor neighbour has loads of "stuff" on his PC. So, instead of hanging a cable out my comp out the window and into his it got me thinking...
If we used something like MSN Messenger, will we get really really fast speeds as we are on the same UBR?
no if your both using your NTL connections you will get your max speeds depending on the service level your on

you could go wireless if you wanted to ;)
nah, it was only an idea anyway. i just thought that if we are on the same ubr we would get faster than normal speeds

Unfortunately this is true. How it would be nice to be able to get network speeds between yourself and your nextdoor neighbour

maybe that would be a business opportunity for ntl ?
It would be very difficult to implement, as the rate capping is done by the modem itself. So they'd have to remove/increase the rate cap in the .cm file, and rate cap somewhere higher up the chain, and have that recognise local IP addresses and let them through...
This is similar to what NTL do with '150k' STB broadband users, where the actual modem cap is 256k, but higher up the line the link is capped to 150k.
You can get around this by just using two (or more) simultaneous streams though, so I don't think NTL will be introducing it across the board just yet...
Hi looeyb,
Depending on whether or not you have a cd writer ( and if your not breaking any copyright's ) you could always use a cd-rw disc. this would keep the cost down and also give you a much faster
( transfer rate )
Just a thought :)
couldnt you just buy a usb hard drive or something and transfer stuff like that costs initially but worth it if its alot of data.............
Just go wireless, one off fee of around £45 - £50 each and you will have a 54mbps direct connection to share :)

I think the cable out of the window sounds a fantastic idea.

Take your hard drive round, slave it on his PC copy all the files onto your hard drive, then stick it back in your PC.
Quickest way possible
