You know, if these journalists actually did some research rather than scare mongering they'd have nothing to talk about.
The atkins diet is a balanced diet.
People assume that it means no carbs, it doesn't.
Yes you cut out the carbs when you start, to break your body's addiction, but you re-introduce them slowly until you reach balance.
Then you carry on with a balance of carbs, fruit, veg, meat and protien. Probably more balanced than a lot of other diets on the market!
If someone abuses it and goes underweight, that isn't the diet's fault anymore than with people who just stop eating all together or vomit after eating.

there have been incidents, where people have done harm to there kidneys following the atkins diet.
you need a 'balanced' diet not an exclusion of foods.

Following the atkins diet gives you a balanced diet, it doesn't exclude foods, unlike other diets which don't get as much bad press as the atkins
And the people who have had kidney problems on the atkins diet already had kidney problems before they were on it and the extra protien has exaserbated the situation.
Elizabeth Ward, founder and president of the British Kidney Patient Association said: "If you have healthy kidneys, you can't eat enough protein to damage your kidneys. "

low carbs affects the bodys preformance
If you eat a low carbohydrate diet, it is less efficient for your body to store glycogen in your body. You may especially notice an energy drain if you do not take days off from your workouts routine. A glycogen drain will make you may feel listless and uninterested in exercising. You need to take a few days off from your work out to allow your body to recharge the glycogen stores

The diet is low carb for first few weeks only, and the myth about no fruit or veg is totally that, a myth. This diet only gets a bad press because it doesn't constitute just so called "rabbit food", like the traditional diet.
People following the diet properly by the book should see results. The problem is that the untrue thoughts about the diet spread, and people go on Atkin's eating NO carbohydrates and NO friut or veg and lots of fry ups, thinking this is all the diet consists of, when it is in fact not!
If you require any more of my opinions, there is a nice biology essay on the subject i did!:blah:
