I was in a newsagents/general shop yesterday

and the bloke in front of me in the queue
got asked what he wanted
"a bar six", he replied

now, I have not seen or heard or those for many many years
and was not aware that they still made them
(a chocolate bar if you don't know what I'm on about)

made me wonder where this bloke had been all these years
surely they do not still make them??

Did the shopkeeper
hand him a bar six?
If so then your question
is answered

Maybe that bloke who asked for it had just come back from spending 40 years in a far flung foreign place (or prison). Maybe it was his dream to come back and buy Bar Six. Just think how gutted he would be. :)

I think the Bar Six came out in the early 60's but I can't remember exactly when it actually stopped appearing in the mainstream shops. I seem to have a vague recollection a good while ago of seeing it just in vending machines, small cafes or on trains and thinking at the time that I'd never seen it in the shops for ages.

For those that don't know, it was a chocolate covered wafer made by Cadburys (six wafers you snapped off the bar in one vertical row). Orange wapper.

The Bar Six was a cheap way to fool kids into thinking they were getting a real treat because it was the same size and appearance of a large bar of chocolate and hence looked much more expensive than it actually was.

It was probably considered as the Thinking Man's KitKat. :)

I can the bar six but can't remember the actual look of the wafer bar as you descibe it - tho it does ring a distant bell

can you remember those 'smokers sets' you used to get as kids?

all banned now due to PC etc - but a good laugh at the time?

I will never ever be able to forget them thanks to the subtle way my mum let me know she knew about my illicit smoking as an early teen by giving me one of those very sets for Christmas nearly 40 years ago. LOL

bar six were yummy and nicer than kit-kats (which taste bland now nestle dont use rowntrees choccy anymore)...
they disappeared at the same time as the Aztec bar which was rumoured to have "something in it" because it became the number one selling choccy bar in the early 70s and then cadburys withdrew it at the height of its fame......
many of these "old" sweets are still sold at asda if you look hard enough ie "old jamaica" "mint cracknel" "country style" "sports mixtures" "sherbet fountains" "flying saucers" and the like......
ice breaker was always my fave as a kid

so do you know when they took bar six off the market?

as I have a feeling it was a s@d of a long time ago
which made me initially raise an eyebrow to the bloke asking for it yesterday

had forgotten about 'old jamaica'!

Hi all,
I remember these wonderful tasting chocolate bars from the early to mid 70's.
Then forgot about them until the early 90's when I think I found them at a specialty store imported from England (once again I think ?), if I remember correctly I did buy one at the time and they didn't taste the same as I remembered, but maybe my taste buds are less sensitive than when I was a child. As I remembered they had a soft hazelnut cream center nestled between wafers and dipped in milk chocolate. I miss them : (
I was hoping to find them again one day and give it another try maybe my taste buds are better now ; )
If anyone has any leads pls post or fwd to my email.

Wouldn't a Kit-Kat Chunky sufficed?

PC my backside. They stopped selling them nearly forty years ago. I don't think the early seventies was at the height of the imaginary PC wars.

They were stopped because they encouraged children to buy cigarettes in later life. These "sweets" were probably marketed by tobacco companies, in partnership with the sweet manufacturers, to ensure a continued growth in new customers.

Most choc bars when withdrawn in one area might keep going elsewhere.. But Bar Six were only made for the UK market. None of the usual specialist sweetstores have them in and haven't had for many a year.. Even if they could find them they'd be years out of date..

Bar Six, I remember them well, very nice.

I liked chocolate cigars and cigarettes as well.
Always got some at Christmas time in the old stocking, along with an orange.
Chocolate tools were good as well.

I love old threads been dragged up.

I've had a few Bar Six when I were a lad. Do you remember the Aztec chocolate bar? Similar to the Mars bar but bigger and better tasting.

Anyone remember the Cadburys Milk Tray Bars? And all the others! :).
http://www.cadbury.co.uk/ourproducts/yesterday/Pages/Yesterday.aspx

For the old Jamaica bar, did the advert on telly end with...." And don`t ye all knock it back at once" or something like that?
