I keep getting the mail of another ntl user who has the same email address as me except he has some numbers on the end of his username

I emailed ntl's e-mail support a while ago when it started but recieved no reply

Welcome to NTHW Tom.

Just a thought but I'm betting what is happening is that you are getting blind copied on a mass (spam) e-mail rather than the mail actually being sent to you in error.

What sort of content is in the e-mails?

ie. Is it clearly "personal" mail obviously meant for this other "Tommy" (maybe the one with the Red Fez) :)

the content includes personal mail

e.g. order details of online purchases

OK in that case the solution may be sending the "other" person a short note letting them know you are receiving mail that appears to have been meant to go to them as the cause could be they have an incorrect email addy being used when they type it in in a website (possibly forgetting to add the numbers)

The repettition could be caused by them having set that email up to be auto inserted when a website calls for an email address and they are not aware they are using incorrect details as when they start typing tom..... it auto inserts the full email for them.

I'm not saying it isn't a fault caused by misdirection just that it would be the first time I have heard of that happening.

EDIT: If the response to that from them is "no I have never used that site or ordered anything" then we could be back to it being spam or some other device being used to give the impression it is "legitimate" to get you to reply to it and thereby confirm your address is valid.

the mails are for the correct address as i can see the name in the 'to' column which isnt my address

Yes that's exactly what you will see if you are being BCC'd as part of a mass e-mail to a whole list of other people also getting a copy of exactly the same mail and not seeing themselves on any distro list.

It's a fairly common tactic these days sadly.

but that doesnt explain why i get all his personal mails

e.g. from argos about his purchases

See post 4 above for a possible explanation for that happening. I'm sure if it is a mistake he will appreciate getting his "Lost" mail and if not you will at least be closer to getting an answer.

Other than that I'm out of ideas as without all the headers etc it's difficult to know exactly how the error may have occured I'm just making guesses based on previous experience.

Had one more thought on this.

When sending the note to the other person do it via a hotmal account and be careful to address it exactly as his address appears on the e-mails already received.

Should that e-mail end up arriving in your account you will have the "proof" to give to NTL in support of mail being misdirected. :)

The user
other user had email
forwarding setup (via http://selfcare.ntlworld.com/cgi-bin/frontend
<http://selfcare.ntlworld.com/cgi-bin/frontend> ) to my address, but had
local delivery on as well. This would mean that he was still getting his
email, but i was getting it too!

james from NTL disabled this and its worked

cheers james

Cool way to go James!!!

Sorta sounded like it had to be something other than misdirected mail so glad it has now been sorted.
