According to the newspapers, Pub Landlords are being urged to listen for giggling/laughter which is not natural. I kid you not, there is a recent trend that drinkers are using laughing gas and helium on the pub premises. Apparently these gases are potentially highly explosive and can cause asphyxiation if inhaled. Tight trousers have the same effect I am lead to believe. How does the poor Landlord differentiate?

As far as I am aware Helium is non toxic and non flammable, and Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) was /is used as as an aenesthetc in minor ops such as dental surgery.

Helium is often used in mixes for specialist deep diving scuba gas mixes. Thus it can be inhaled, but the blend of gas is important. The body requires an adequate supply of oxygen for the person to stay alert. An incorrect mix with too much helium, replacing or instead of oxygen can result in unconciousness, or even death.

As helium is a lighter gas than air, this is what changes the effects on the vocal chords leading to the higher pitched squeaky voices.

Landlord: Yer barred, get out!
Drinker: Why?
