View Full Version : Can't sleep?

Sometimes, for no apparent reason, my mind is so active I can't get to sleep, or I waken in the middle of the night with the same problem. So I have devised a little ploy, the subject of which is deliberately boring, as the object is to get back to the Land of Nod ASAP. I have to remember the following list of soaps (toilet/washing etc.,) past or present, and it goes a bit like this (sometimes have to go through it more than once)...Don't poo poo it, it does work! Pure, Simple, Johnston's Baby, Fairy, Dove, Carex, Nivea, Cammay, Lux, Knight's Castile, Palmolive, Derbac, Carbolic, Sunlight, Lifebouy, Pears, Pearl, Cussons Imperial, Cussons Cold Cream, Shield, Sugar Soap, Saddle, Soap, Camoris (Lidls), Lye......zzzzzz (beginning to work already). Can anyone can come up with ones I have missed? This is now my 100th post, how do I go about getting me some reputation? and can someone please tell me how to submit attachments (in laymen's terms)....

What a great idea. A thread to help you sleep.

I find Chinese food does the trick.

And no, it's nothing to do with the eight pints consumed beforehand. ;)

Different things work for different folks - here's what works for me; try it, it might help :)

I had to have some time off work, due to stress, and went to see a stress specialist. He taught me a technique, which I still use, and find very effective.

Have a nice hot bath, just before you go to bed, soak in it (the bath) for 15-20 minutes, and have a glass of wine/scotch/etc whilst soaking. Put some herbal relaxants (no, not that herbal relaxant) such as niteoyl, on your pillow.

When you are laid down, close your eyes, and try to visualise what is keeping you awake. When you have it in you mind's eye, pick it up (and you can use your hand to do this, until you can visualise picking it up in your mind's eye), and put it to the side. Having put it to the side, imagine you have put it in a box, and imagine sealing the box. Carry on doing this, until you have "packed" away the things that are keeping you awake.

How this works (I was told), that by putting them away, you know they will be there the next day, so you are not trying to fool yourself by wishing them away. But, having put them away, you get a good night's sleep, and the things that seemed so worrying aren't that bad once you have had a good sleep.

Hope this helps. :tu:

i suffer from insomnia a lot! I find the more you try to get to sleep the harder it becomes, so i try to really relax. went on a course at work and the doctor chappy gave some fab tips on relaxing.
he taught us a technique were you pretend to be drawing a box in your mind, as you draw up one side, you breathe in slowly, as you draw the line across the top you hold the breathe in, and as you draw the line down you slowly breath out. repeat as necessary!
it really does seem to work, because i concentrate on my breathing so much that everything else going on in my mind, is pushed somewhere to the back and before i know it my alarm is going off

I must've been asleep when I thought I posted on here yesterday?! :erm:
oh dear. I actually got a good nights sleep last night, for the first time in yonks, but I'm still yawning my head off. A good read (ok so it was holiday brochures) before bed seems to do the trick for me then!

I have no problem getting to sleep now, a few weeks ago I couldn't sleep for love nor money after a situation I found myself in, now I can sleep for England which is a good thing.

this sounds nuts but it works for me. when I can't sleep I get up have a cup of tea then go back to bed, I'm asleep within 20 mins. alternatively I suppose you could just stay up and do something useful.
