This (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5434687) is a story about kids using the teen repeller noise as a ring tone.
It also has an mp3 of the sound - I can hear it, and I'm 30.... can you?

Lets play spot the idiot.. can a mod move this, or delete and I'll repost... :)

Strange. I had my hearing tested a few months back and came out with some excellent results but didn't hear a thing

That is so very annoying to me at 18. Seems kind of scammy though, I doubt that most mobile phone transducers can produce those kind of frequencies at volume. I may just be plain wrong tho ;)

At normal volume, the only high-pitched irritating whine I could hear was the news-reader.

If I turned up the volume a bit, though, I could hear "teen repeller", though.

I've just been playing it at very high volume to my son and daughter I could see by the distressing look on their faces that they were hearing it. Yet I could have heard a pin drop. :)

I couldn't hear it and I'm 21, nor could my brother who is 19. I'll have to try it on my Girlfriend as she has a huge range of hearing

Nope! But at 53 I would have been worried anyway..it would have meant I'd wasted all my time going to rock concerts.;)

I think I will use it as the gap between tracks when I make a cd for the car, the kids don't like my music anyway so it makes sense to annoy them as much as possible :D

Im 34 and I can hear it.

Ermm it would seem that this technology is flawed. I think I can hear it because I have never been into loud music at clubs or concerts. It seems from the replies here that a lot of adults can hear it so its not actually fit for the purpose that it is sold. They arent cheap either!

Someone is going to make their millions off this and retire in some nice warm country.

Reminds me of some experiement we did back in school where we increased the pitch higher and higher until no one could hear it.
Dogs however would be able to and a few minutes later the whole surrounding houses had dogs barking away.

i got hold of this ringtone a while back and put in on my phone, taking it to work with me. funny thing is, some of the older guys I work with actually cannot hear it!!!! most of us could easily hear it however.

dogs can hear approximately 40 Hz to 60,000 Hz, whereas humans hear approximately 30Hz to 20,000Hz. I have a clip of our dog on my phone going MAD when I produced a 10 second 23,000 cycle burst. VERY funny!!!

I think I can hear it because I have never been into loud music at clubs or concerts. Nemmie - noooooo, au contrare! I can hear it too -

I used to go to lots of gigs (to see bands like 'A' and Symposium, saw both more than 50x each heehee) - I started to have to wear earplugs, and I so got told off by one of the bands for not wearing them once! Served me right really oops:

and as Ramrod said - that noise is what tinnitus sounds like... :(

40 years old here, and a lot of gigs (I was quite fond of the 1980s 'New York Noise' genre. Not for the faint-eared ones)

Frankly, I'm quite pleased to hear anything after said barrage. This particular mp3 though falls on deaf ears :)
