and i thought "what's it all about?"

I can't remember the details but, a number of years ago, an attempt was made to publish a newspaper containing only good news. It failed.

The answer to your question, "What's it all about", is, of course, "Alfie". If you want to broaden the question out a bit, the answer is 42. :)

EDIT On a completely different tack, I'm sure that I've got too many commas in my penultimate sentence. Anyone care to have a go at repunctuating it?

What do you get if you multiply 6 by 9 was the question?

Guess they must have used NTL's billing system to do the calculation. ;)
