in japan NTT data corp has managed to sucessfully link 12,206 random computers across the internet and completed a task which would take a single PC 611 years in 132 days

However, they're not the first by a long chalk. Quite a few years ago the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) project supplied a screensaver to volunteers that used their PCs to process SETI data.

PS As far as I know, they never found any.

PPS And no jokes about, "They shouldn't have searched on Earth, then." :)
