Im currently in a non cabled area but moving into cleethorpes / grimsby which has NTL. I have never had cable before so how would I go about getting it installed?

At first we want Broadband only but plan to get NTL as the TV service also when we are settled in.

We plan to get the 10mb connection so if anyonce could be kind enough to show a speed test from the area.. I know some people are from grimsby and cleethorpes on here http://forums.ntlhell.co.uk/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif

Would you recommend them or not? As NTL is all fiber I have been told form my friend in bristol that telewest (also ntl now) is far better because of no line length restrictions as on his old 512kb BT line.

can i ask what NTL CS & TS means?

Thanks.

P.S. can i request one of those new blue NTL (250 IS IT?) cable modems on install if I get the 10mb? - I hear they are the best for 10mb. - or dont they let you pick?

Thanks

can i ask what NTL CS & TS means? CS = Customer Support
TS = Technical Support
They're one and the same really.

They seem to be the standard for 10Mb installations anyway, and yes they are NTL Home:250 boxes. Worth asking the engineer who installs it if he has one. Obviously they may not have one with them, in which case you're out of luck, unless your modem suddenly 'breaks' and you need a replacement ;)

When I moved they came in, connected me and removed my big silver modem and replaced it with the small blue one.

Disconnection, bad CS, your billing to be buggered alot of time, them to upgrade ( cockup ) your settings over and over.

That is what to expect cold pure and simple.

I've generally found NTL to be faster and more reliable than my old BT ADSL. I left BT because they cocked up my line (long story), and I was getting passed in a loop between departments, none of which wanted to help me.

On the few occasions that I have needed to speak to NTL, usually the first person I go through to can deal with my problem.

There were a couple of evenings a few weeks ago when my broadband died. It was a national problem. That's all, in about 3 years.

I get 9-10Mbps all the time. There again, I do live in a neighbourhood full of pensioners, so I probably don't share the bandwidth with anyone.

Are you an adequate sample of all NTL users?

No. I thought not.

You get the wrong end of the stick reading this forum as most of the members come here to seek help or moan most of the time, but the real picture is, that in general the NTL experience is quite simple and gratifying

Well my brother used to have ntl in grimsby and I asked him and he said he always had full speed on 3mb and never called ntl CS because he never had too lol! He had tv and 3mb but now he hasnt he told ntl to "go away" after they wanted to bill him £650 for calls he never made.

Is NTL good? On my 2mb atm i get 210 - 248kb/s which is almost full and it hasnt been off in around 5 months!

If you get 10meg broadband straight off then they will give you a 250 because the older models don't support the full speed. It is only existing customers who need to arrange (and pay) for an upgrade, for now at least.

If you're planning to get TV later anyway, then its worth asking about it at the same time as they may give you an introductory deal on that too.

I've generally found ntl to be good in Portsmouth, although the service does vary by area. It looks like customer services will be improving too, after the Virgin Mobile merger.

One thing to bear in mind with 10meg is that you won't get that speed for everything. If the remote site only 2meg available then you'll still only download at 2meg. p2p and newsgroups should benefit though.

The old saying comes into this.

When NTL are good it's like heaven but when they go bad its hell

lol, my bro said its good in the grimsby area.

I'm in Cleethorpes & my connection is fine, billing has been fine & I am quite happy with my TV, which I've recently changed from analogue to digital. I've been a customer over 5 years.

One of the problems with NTL is that the customer experience can vary, depending where you live and which franchise intalled the original infrastructure.

In the case of Grimsby & Cleethorpes, it would seem that Diamond Cable, originally did a fairly decent job, that coupled with our transparent proxies being handled via Nottingham, which seems to be a very stable platform, means that your bro is, pretty much, correct.

- that isn't to say that other people, who do have problems, are 'wrong', it is just that this particular area seems to be comparitively ok.

The vast majority of ntl customers have no problems. Do try and remember that this forum is not representative of the ntl customer base as a whole. It's a place where people with problems come, not those who are 100% happy.

As homealone also points out - it very much also depends on who originally installed the network, as most areas were bought 'as is' by ntl.

Wow, i read somewhere that cable and adsl are different. Cable is better because it uses a different route to find the server which is faster and same for adsl except its slower. I look forward to cable :)

Thanks for all the help.

the installation tech should test/adjust the levels on that wire & attach it to the modem. He should leave you with a cd, you do not need, and cables to connect by ethernet, or usb to your pc.
