I have been browsing this forum for a while now but have only now decided to join as previously i have felt no need to post, but i have a problem that i am not sure if anyone can help me with.

I live in Nottingham and have NTL 2mb with which i have never experienced any problems apart from the very occasional slow speeds due to sheer volumes of traffic using the network that we all get from time to time. My problem is however that for the last 48 hours my speed has been about 1/10th of what it should be, i can get nothing more than 25-30 kilobytes per second and when i tried the ntl speed test earlier when on the phone to tech support i only got 23 & 18 kbs!!! Normally i easily get 220-240 kbs no problems, the tech support woman was only able to offer limited support due to maintainance today which basically involved testing my modem and getting me to remove the ethernet cable, then asking me to boot in safe mode, all of which did nothing.
My issue also is the fact that i work away at the moment and hadnt used my pc from last sunday evening(when everything was fine) til friday evening (when i got very slow speeds) so i know it isnt anything i have done here.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated, if any more info is required then let me know

speed test as follows

1st 128K took 5172 ms = 25343 Bytes/sec = approx 211 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 8031 ms = 16321 Bytes/sec = approx 136 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 4875 ms = 26887 Bytes/sec = approx 224 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 8719 ms = 15033 Bytes/sec = approx 125 kbits/sec

Cheers Guys

Have a quick look around this forum, there are numerous threads on this subject. You are not on your own. ;)

Nottingham here too, and not only do I have slow connections, but no connection at all for some of the time, and this has been going on for a week now.

Have you rung tech support about it either?

Tech support (sounding like the other side of the world) told me to shut everything down and reboot PC, modem, router and all would be fine!

I'd never have thought of trying something so 'technical' as that!

it is best to try the basic options like rebooting, firewalls, downloading from several sites.

Then searching (searching for your problem is good :D), maybe its just a localized problem that will be fixed soon, a commen modem problem (like the need to upgrade your modem for the 10MB). Then a tech to come out is next. It is a pain in the ass but how stupid would a lot of people feel if a tech came out to say itst heir FireWall :D

oh yeah im in notts and got

1st 128K took 62 ms = 2114065 Bytes/sec = approx 17589 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 188 ms = 697191 Bytes/sec = approx 5801 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 312 ms = 420103 Bytes/sec = approx 3495 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 766 ms = 171112 Bytes/sec = approx 1424 kbits/sec
