View Full Version : Upgrade hasn't worked?

Hi all,

I've just upgraded my 2Mbps connection to 10Mbps (at approx. 21:50 this evening) and as I was informed by the upgrade site, my cable modem rebooted.

The modem is a Terayon TJ210 (connected via Ethernet) - and after reading various comments on whether the upgrade would work on this modem or not, I decided to give it a go.

After the modem rebooted, my connection speed dramatically reduced to 200-300Kbps for around 20 minutes, and now it's running at the nearly-2Mbps speed that it was before (albeit slower).

My question is: does it take a while for the speed increase to be applied, even though I saw the modem reboot when I was told it would? And also, why has my connection speed dropped to lower than 2Mbps?

Thanks for any replies! :)

Hi again guys,

My connection has just suddenly jumped up to 8.x Mbps d/l - not quite 10Mbps, but better than 1.x Mbps.

Is this what I can expect from an "up-to 10Mbps" service, or should I be getting a bit more than 8.x Mbps?

If I should be getting a faster connection, maybe I'll have to give NTL a ring to arrange for a new modem to be sent out to me

Thanks again,
Daniel

8 MBPS is all you'll get on the 10meg I'm affraid, you'll get it a bit faster but only in the mornings.

Thanks for the reply Nidge! :D

Will I still only get ~8Mbps max even if I buy a new ntl:250 SACM, because I've heard that the Terayon TJ210's only have a 10BaseT interface so will only operate up to 10Mbps, and not at that speed.

Is anyone actually getting anywhere near 10Mbps, instead of nearly 2Mbps slower? :erm:

Thanks again,
Daniel

Did the jump happen around midnight by any chance. If it did then it fit's in with my feelings that NTL are traffic shaping between 6.00pm and midnight.

No problems

I have the 250 modem (the little blue one) and the speeds I get from that are 9.32MBPS on a good day. You can give it a go but I doubt you'll get any faster than what you are on now.

Hi Bill,

Yes it did! As you can see from the time of my update post, it was 00:24 - which was around the time I noticed the speed increase, logged in and posted the reply. :D

Daniel interesting try another test between 11.30pm and midnight please.

Bill I had some weird shaping experience last night, I was getting 200-300kB of a .nl ftp which was a bit faster then normal for my connection and midnight passed speeds stayed the same. But I then logged out of the ftp and logged back in queued more files and suddenly speeds were 700-900kB. this was around 1am. The ftp I should add is only a 10meg half duplex so can easily plummet from its own contention so not something I will judge solely on.

Daniel

Have you done a speedtest between 6pm and 9pm to see if speeds drops significantly?

I've read the post from Chrysalis which is along the same lines but normal evening use is when most bandwidth is likely to be gobbled up.

It will be interesting to see what happens at midnight tonight.

Hi Guys!

I'm afraid I couldn't do the speed tests at the times you said as I was at work until after 10pm and afterwards went out for a 'few' drinks ;)

The next time I have the time to check this out is Sunday as I'm off work. I'll be sure to do a speed test some time between 18:00 & 21:00 and 23:30 & 00:00, most likely half-way between the given times.

Speak soon!
