I'm getting really slow header download from newshosting atm.

Anybody else getting this?

There's no problems posted on the NH website so I'm wondering if it is something to do with NTL.

When i figure out how to download a header in Newsleecher i'll tell you!

I use newsgroups all the time but don't waste my bandwidth on headers:)

It's now updating headers from 1 group and my speed is 500k/sec is that slow ?

Well after a bit of experimentation I've solved the problem by changing port number to a very high one and connection is better then ever 2mb completely maxed out constantly.

Looks like NTL may possibly be throttling normal ports.

I usually use nzb files now as well but certain groups I like to read the headers.

Newshosting recommends port 9000 for NTL.

That's the port I'm using now, where did you see that recommendation?

Its not to do with throttling, its because it takes a quicker route.

On their front page several months ago.

It's to do with the time of day I have found. In the morning to early evening you can get max out on Newshosting with only 1 connection, but after 6, you may need to up it to the full 8.

Maybe traffic shaping, but more likely just congestion on the UBR you are on and some damn fool maxing out their p2p upload and buggering it for everyone else. It doesn't matter what port you are on if your UBR is under stress so I'm led to believe. I could be wrong.

Your connection will not take a different route based on the Port Number (Unless its 80 for web browsing of course)

Ports 7000, 8000 and 9000 force your outgoing traffic onto different backbone fiber providers and may offer faster connections, depending on your ISP's connections to the internet. We often hear port 9000 is faster to Europe.

More than one news provider / newshosting reseller state this.

Port 3128 works nicely too
