Speed test results fluctuating wildly.

Ok. I know about the "accuracy" of simple speed tests and there are factors like wireless and local firewall to take into account.

However the results of the test on this site seem a tad variable.

1st 512K took 2359 ms = 217 KB/sec, approx 1788 Kbps, 1.75 Mbps
2nd 512K took 3921 ms = 130.6 KB/sec, approx 1076 Kbps, 1.05 Mbps
3rd 512K took 125 ms = 4096 KB/sec, approx 33751 Kbps, 32.96 Mbps
4th 512K took 1828 ms = 280.1 KB/sec, approx 2308 Kbps, 2.25 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 9731 Kbps, 9.5 Mbps
I'm on the 10M service via STB so expect around 5M at best. Usually this test gives about 2M at this time. Tonight I'm getting that little peak. Shame the 3rd fig isn't more usual ;)

If you ignore the 3rd result, you are averaging just under 2meg.

It looks like the 3rd test came from the cache.

If I repeat the high figure bounces around to some other position. The "best" I had was a low of around 0.5M and a high of 40M.

ADSL guide varies from about 1M to 4M, zdnet is .1M to 8M, other sites vary even more between .1M and 132M.

I'm on 10M via STB so I'd expect around the 5M mark. Wireless not stretched at all. Like many others 3M was fairly constant, 10M jumps around.

Downloads seem to be around 200kB to 600kB, as long as average is over 360kB then I'm not too unhappy at the moment.

As I said, I know that most of these tests can vary so I don't take them too seriously. I'd usually test properly by grabbing a large file from blueyonder.sunfreeware.co.uk or similar mirrored site.

if you struggling to top 2meg then I suggest you just downgrade, its less painful that way you at least get close to what you paying for.
