Hi,

I'm d/l at just over 600kbs, what does that = in mb terms? because i'm supposed to be on 10meg. I'm on home 120 and pretty sure i'm not getting the full amount. I don't seem to have got this firmware update thing that everyone else has, strange. Anyway, i'll ring ts up soon. Cheers  :monkey:

6mb (roughly) - so it looks like (as long as that is kilobytes and not kilobits), which is quite good for a 120 box as they have trouble with the "up to" 10mb service.

That's about 5mb. It could be a number of things holding back the speed. The amount of people sharing your local UBR, how busy that traffic is, the modem itself, where you're downloading from, etc.

I have the 120 modem and get 7mb, others get much less, some get the full 10mb.

Yea i understand that, but i was led to believe there was this firmware update that was to sort all this out for the home 120 users.

Also if your using a usb connection for the modem this will limit you to 5mb.

If you are using usb switch to ethernet if possible.

do you know which model BEFSR41? - version 2, for example, only has a 10Mb WAN interface & at half duplex will only do up to about 5Mb/s

as far as i know it is half duplex - what that means is the router will wait for an acknowledgement from the destination before sending the next packet of information, so data only flows one way at a time - which is why it will only download at about 5Mb - you need a 10/100 Mb/s WAN interface to download at a full 10Mb/s, which the version 3 router has, but not the version 2.

Oh god, looks like i'm gonna be going back to 2 meg. I don't wanna have to get a new router. Actually the reason i have this router is because i have my xbox and comp upstairs, and i tried putting the cable coming from the modem, straight into my comp and xbox, but it doesn't work.

hard to say, the LAN side in V2 is 10/100 so that description could fit both. If you can see a picture, the Version3 one has a Cisco logo on the front of it, while the V2 doesn't.

What does the 10/100 bit mean? i thought that meant it can do 100mb broadband :dunce: This stuff is so confusing, how are normal people supposed to work anything out these days.

Also, i'm on a mac not pc, there's no mention that any versions of the befsr41 work on mac's, but it does. Unbelievable

I know what you mean, but it isn't so long ago that networks were the domain of the ubergeek and I think a bit of that impenetrability continues - manufacturers assume anyone buying networking kit understands the jargon. ;)

Ok here goes, there are 2 'sides' to the router, the WAN (Wide area network) connects to the outside world via the modem/stb, while the LAN (Local area network) connects to the pc's.

On a version 2 befsr41 the WAN runs at 10Mb/s half duplex, wheras the LAN runs at up to 100Mb/s half duplex (the 10/100 just means it will work at either speed). The WAN is the bottleneck in this case.

On a version3 befsr41 both the WAN & the LAN run at 10/100, so will work at full speed with a 10Mb/s connection

<edit> it shouldn't make any difference using a MAC - as far as the router is concerned all ethernet interfaces look the same :)

- I think that one is still a version2, sorry :(

- if you look in the specs it mentions a 10baseT interface - which I believe is the WAN at 10Mb/s - not the 10/100 that you need.

There is one i'm watchin on ebay now. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5865007956&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

no problem - I just happen to have V2 of the same router & have been looking into options in case there is a choice to go to a 'fair use' 10Mb upgrade from my current 2Mb. :)
