does anyone actually know how aids started ive had a quick look around and it seems it started out as the HIV virus from chimpanzes there is HIV-1 and HIV-2
and the polio vaccine maybe to blame for the outbreaks in africa

If I remember correctly it's not a 'new' disease anyway - I'm sure I remember reading something that said the HIV virus was detected in some human laboratory samples dating back to the 1950's.
I don't remember the program I was watching a while back but it stated that part of the aids virus was manmade and was not and could not be found naturally. There where accusations that it started out as a form of birth rate control introduced by the " west " into north africa and that it got out of hand.
Like I said, I don't remember the prog but if I do I will post it :)

I doubt it is. AFAIK, HIV requires years to incubate. I would have thought that if it was a weapon (of Mass Destruction maybe), they would design something that works a bit quicker than HIV. I would also have thought they would develop a vaccine for it.

I don't think what is being discussed is an issue. I think it's the way it's being discussed.
I'll repeat what Incognitas said earlier. I think kronas intended this as a serious discussion. If he had intended as the joke people are clearly taking it as, he would have posted it in humour.
IIRC it entered the human race from african's EATING (not bonking) chimps.
This then spread, eventually reaching someone who transfered it to the sex dens of the orient.
From there Patient Zero (can't remember his name) brought it to the gay saunas of LA.
It then spread (of course most people foolishly thought it was only a gay disease) through blood transfusions (loads of haemophiliacs have died because of this), bisexuals and needle sharing.
Somewhen it mutated into type 2 HIV either when it moved to the orient or america, leaving mainly type 1 HIV in africa.

After watching a couple of mates go through hell because they have HIV and then to come on a forum to see utter drivel being sprouted about people having sex with monkies and about AIDS being man made to control the population of Africa is just plain infuriating.
People seem to take Urban Myths and turn them into reality......Ive found time and time again that it doesnt matter if you state facts and figures people would still want the rubbish and to not change any view!
Basically you can tell someone the reasons how AIDS came about and back it up but really they still think that monkey sex is used to kill black people as their mate told em down the pub.
The one good thing is that HIV doesnt have to be the big killer it once was.....someone with HIV can live an ordinary life ..with the same life span with the correct drugs :)

maybe aids did originate from monkies, and i am not going to comment on the way this was transefered to humans, i don't know and i dont care....
maybe i should lighten up (as i am sure some people will tell me to do) however i think AIDS is a serious issue and think it is insensitive to make light of it........
i am not saying it is the case, but we do not know every member of this forum personally, and someone on here may have HIV..imagine how they would feel to read this........

Debate around the origin of AIDS has sparked considerable interest and controversy since the beginning of the epidemic. However, in trying to identify where AIDS originated, there is a danger that people may try and use the debate to attribute blame for the disease to particular groups of individuals or certain lifestyles.
The first cases of AIDS occurred in the USA in 1981, but they provide little information about the source of the disease. There is now clear evidence that the disease AIDS is caused by the virus HIV. So to find the source of AIDS we need to look for the origin of HIV.
It is now generally accepted that HIV is a descendant of simian (monkey) immunodeficiency virus (SIV). Certain simian immunodeficiency viruses bear a very close resemblance to HIV-1 and HIV-2, the two types of HIV.
In February 1999 it was announced1 that a group of researchers from the University of Alabama had studied frozen tissue from a chimpanzee and found that the simian virus it carried (SIVcpz) was almost identical to HIV-1. The chimpanzee came from a sub-group of chimpanzees known as Pan troglodytes troglodytes, which were once common in west-central Africa.
The findings of this 10-year long research into the origin and evolution of HIV by Paul Sharp of Nottingham University and Beatrice Hahn of the University of Alabama were published in 20032. They concluded that wild chimps became infected simultaneously with two simian immunodeficiency viruses (SIVs) which had "viral sex" ****NOT MONKEY SEX**** to form a third virus capable of infecting humans and causing AIDS.
It has been known for a long time that certain viruses can pass from animals to humans, and this process is referred to as zoonosis.

So there you have it the Origin of AIDS/HIV in a nut shell.
There are other theory's like the one below, but the one above the generally accepted theory.
Some other rather controversial theories have contended that HIV was transferred iatrogenically i.e. via medical experiments. One particularly well publicised theory is that polio vaccines played a role in the transfer.
The journalist Edward Hooper has suggested that HIV could be traced to the testing of an oral polio vaccine called Chat as batches of the Chat vaccine may have been grown in chimp kidney cells in the Congo, the Wistar Institute and Belgium. That could have resulted in the contamination of the vaccine with chimp SIV, the simian version of HIV-1. This vaccine was then given to about a million people in the Belgian Congo, Ruanda and Urundi in the late 1950s.
However, in February 2000 the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia announced that it had discovered in its stores a phial of polio vaccine that had been used as part of this polio vaccination program. The vaccine was subsequently analysed and in April 2001 it was announced3 that no trace had been found of either HIV or chimpanzee. A second analysis4 confirmed that only macaque monkey kidney cells, which cannot be infected with SIV or HIV, were used to make Chat.

I've had too many complaints about this thread now.
AIDS is certainly an issue which cannot be ignored but when discussing it I would expect a degree of compassion and responsibility, but what do i see? Mickey-taking and messing about and I'm sorry but that stop here.
I'm going to watch this thread, if there's any more insensitivity then posts will be removed.
Peeps I hate being like this, you are usually a good bunch but some of the things being said in this thread quite frankly disturbs me.
