hello everyone my sister has just got her new laptop but i have got her ntl install disc in my house is there a way she can get up and running without a ntl disc ? she has a set top box and will use this for internet access

Internet via set top box is a bit alien to me, but have you tried just plugging it in? Works with cable modems. With them the install disk needs to be used only once, when you first get the service up and running after it is installed.

i never used the install disk... just plug the ethernet cable in and xp should find it when u boot up.

You're actually better off doing it this way; you won't be installing any nasty ISP software on your sister's laptop (although I have to admit ntl's Netguard - antivirus app - seems good) and you can set email etc up as you like.
