I have seen a lot of threads on here lately regarding speed issues since 10meg upgrades, lots of "yeh i'm having the same problem" type posts, but not many "i have reported this to ntl and they said..."

I cannot emphasise this enough-

If you do not report problems to ntl nothing will be done about them

Please please please contact technical support with details of problems you are having so that they can collate these issues. The more examples they have, the more likely ntl are to do something.

My problem has been reported and I have had 2 techs look at my problem in their OWN time, but their is a problem high up in ntl it seems I would say related to keeping the network performing as it should, until this problem is resolved it would seem reporting it is hitting a brickwall. If tech support first call was to stop insisting its a router/firewall/pc problem then customers may be more willing to report problems.

hi, when i run the speed test i get

Sun, 22 Jan 2006 11:32:13 GMT
1st 512K took 531 ms = 964.2 KB/sec, approx 7945 Kbps, 7.76 Mbps
2nd 512K took 516 ms = 992.2 KB/sec, approx 8176 Kbps, 7.98 Mbps
3rd 512K took 531 ms = 964.2 KB/sec, approx 7945 Kbps, 7.76 Mbps
4th 512K took 547 ms = 936 KB/sec, approx 7713 Kbps, 7.53 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 7945 Kbps, 7.76 Mbps

and when i am downloading thing the fastest speed i have seen is just over 400kps, maybe thats where i am getting things from, some someone point me in to a place where i can get 100mb files to download and test the speed ?

if i contact NTL are they likely to tell me that this speed is "acceptable" due it the 10meg service as being "upto 10mb" i dont have a router annymore so its not that slowing me down i do have the old slver NTL:120 modem tho.

is it worth me reporting this ?

I contacted TS yesterday cos my 10mb has been nowhere near 10mb for the past week or so more like 1mb to 5mb they pointed me to this page (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/testmyspeed/) to test the 50mb download... its a lot better than it has been but still not 10mb, this is more like 6.5Mb

i've tried all of the other speed test sites that normally give me good results but none of them have lately.

Yep I also get full speed there, but that is because its on NTL's network, try giving them the Giganews speed tester after 3pm ;)

Its where their network talks to other networks that the big problems often seem to occur..

I've deleted all of the off topic posts from this thread now- it is here merely to serve as a reminder that if you don't contact ntl about problems they won't do anything about them.

Any discussion on this issue can continue, however this thread is not for discussing the quality of technical support, whether 10meg is upto 10meg or not, or anything else about 10meg. Any further off topic postings will be removed.

Are there any ntl tech support bods that post here, who confirm whether or not there is a problem with *some* 10meg customers and if so what is being done about it.

Chris,

With all due respect I think you'd need to change the title of the thread if this is the case, it's a bit misleading at best.

Why not just make it a sticky?

Oven Chips (who works for ntl) has been collecting information about 100/120 modems that have been hanging since the 10meg upgrades and we are looking forward to hearing more from him when he has done some investigation :)

I work in ntl telesales (dodges rotten tomatoes) and can't get an admisson that there is a problem. I may have to kidnap and torture a fault tech.....not that you ever see them around the bulding, they seem to be the hardest working people at ntl ;)

Ok so its irrelevant that if we contact tech support about problems and they ignore it? or will CS deal with them?

Well I realise I am one of the people who had posts removed, not that i mind I have to say.

But further to what this topic is in relation to. What do we do once we report a problem and come to a dead end? I mean if someone - as is the case with me, talks me through the steps they have laid before them - then what?

I'm just puzzled as to what this achieves if they deny there is a problem at their end. How do I argue with someone who insists I have peer to peer software and don't know it, for example.

I understand this may not be completely on-topic. But reporting it is one thing, but the going around in circles is another. Calling out of my own pocket day in and day out in the hope of them finding a solution isn't really on.

Yes it's good if we report it, but there is only so much we as consumers can do. So what's is the next step in the process if we follow any tech advice but find no improvement?

Apologies if this veers too far away from the topic, and of course I will understand if it's deleted.

If, like me, you don't want to get the 'it's your router/spyware/P2P' run-around, but just want to add to NTL's number of problem reports, why not just use Responstek, or e-mail?

2nd 512K took 1062 ms = 482.1 KB/sec, approx 3664 Kbps, 3.6 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1860 ms = 275.3 KB/sec, approx 2092 Kbps, 2 Mbps

I appear to have solved my main problem, this may help others so I will post it here.

If you have a 250 modem and power cycling doesnt work (it wasnt changing my upstream channel) there is an option under the tools button top right that says reset everything to defaults, this reboots the modem and it changed my upstream channel from the dreaded 3 to 5 and I have since got ok performance again.

I had to ring NTL Tech support last night, connection speed was crap.

All I got was the standard P2P, Firewall etc etc, the lady eventually said she had tested my modem and that as it was above 5MB..she wouldnt do anything about it... ..how can that be right.

I have got a 2 year old Silver 200 modem.

So appreciate that what your saying is to ring tech support..but they always fob you off with its your own PCs fault..nothing to do with the fact the NTL Infrastructure cant cope

If you call over 5Mbit at peak times crap you're in for a very very long series of disappointments with ISPs in the future.

if your peak time speeds are anything above 3meg I dont think their is much of a case, the real problem are people getting sub 3meg speeds.

I'm gonna blow the trumpet here, I am on a ntl-home 120 on 10mb and I use the net alot ( a few members here can verify i am online alot)

10mb about peak times it flows to about 6-7mb and flowing upto 10mb other times.

Good job :D
