I have spoken to the NTL Cable modem helpdesk and they advise that within the next couple of months NTL will be upgrading 1MB users to 2MB at no extra charge. Has anyone got any further information on this upgrade?

About time too! My brother is on an 8meg adsl connection over copper wires for a similar price to what i pay for 1meg on cable which, I would have thought, is the more efficient transport medium of the two methods

ntl start of on copper then change to fibre. A lot of 8meg adsl customers do not actually get 8megs it all depends on what the local exchange can cope with, my mate went with 8meg adsl and his max conx is 512k????

we did a speed test round there and, yes, it is pretty much the 8meg it says it is. I think ntl are lagging behind because they are reluctant to upgrade their systems hardware etc probably due to not wanting to shell out any money

yeah, but I am talking on a price for price basis - that 10 meg you are referring to is £34.99/month

if this rumor is true and 1mbit > 2mbit

then whats happening to 2mbit users

I don't think ntl's price is a problem- Unlimited 1meg for £17.99 a month is a pretty good price. There aren't many other companies who offer unlimited 1/2 meg for the same price.

So if ntl are going to upgrade the 1meg users to 2meg free of charge does that mean their monthly bill's will go upto the 2meg fee of 24.99 or because they were on the 1meg in the first place stay at 17.99???

Because whats stopping people downgrading to 1meg then getting the free upgrade back upto 2meg and pay the 17.99 instead of the 24.99.

true enough. I just spoke to him and he says he's paying £29.99 for it which I did not realise. I am paying £9.99 for my 1meg connection. So I will have to reconsider what I have been banging on about:dozey:

Going back to the orignal post, can someone confirm this?

It appears not...

CF have not heard anything from ntl that would suggest this is the case.

The thing is with ntl is that they (the management/powers that be) bring schemes in and don't tell anybody about it. When I was in tech support with them they brought in a download cap and the first thing I heard about it was from a customer ringing in to complain about it

Just to clear this matter up, I have again called NTL on Tel 0845 650 0121 and I spoke to the same agent. The agent again confirmed that 1MB will be increasing to 2MB and also that 2MB will be increasing to 3MB. The agent did say that this is not official as yet, but should be anounced/rolled out over the next 2 - 3 months.

all tiers will become 10mb this year as NTL have committed to this around 6 months ago:-

I know, one of things which bugged me big time was that statement and ntl now taking there time, I heard it is gonna happen but well into 2006.

3mbit uncapped would sure be nice...

Id rather go 2mbit > 3mbit uncapped than 2mbit > 10mbit capped ;)

sorry but this just highlights the widening gap between marketing and network engineers, free upgrade for bottom tier when their is more congestion then a rush hour single carriageway.

If this is still true, then why did the 1 & 2meg users get their cap removed? If they get automatically upgraded to 10meg, their cap comes back! Seems an odd move to me.

i am just guessing here but here is what i think

i remember reading about a speed boost button being considered

so once ( if ever lol ) they sort out the problems for the 10 meg / 3 meg customers

the lower lvls will be given the option to use 10 meg for so much time or download limit acording to thier payment and the rest of the time be on thier chosen speed lvl

that is my best guess from every thing i have read so far

I would actually speculate a bit more simply that it's just someone talking sh*t.

I just can't be bothered with considering potential rumours that a bored person in ntl's CS departments decided to make up based on what their uncle's brother's mate's colleague says they read in an email from another department.

Easy :)

That would be the NTL:Nitrous package then.

Seems an odd move to me.that's cos you'll have a choice - 1mb or 2mb uncrapped for £18 or £25 a month or 10mb crapped at 2 levels for £18 or £25 a month depending on cap level. obviously in my opinion that customer service person was talking a load of cap!

Upgrading 1Mbit would be unexpected, as it would not be possible on the Pace STB.

Horrible thought - does this mean the 1mbit unlimited's will have to make sure they opt out of being moved to a higher, but capped tariff - I can see that being an option.

I don't care greatly about speed - and I'm not too bothered about caps so long as it's "no sweat" - 3GB would have been a worry, as I was a little iffy about 1Mbit/5GB as an alternative to 300k/30GB.

So finally, I'd say any prospect of the lowest tier being anything more than 1Mbit "unlimited" or a savagely capped higher speed is rubbish, and they certainly won't want to have former PACE STB broadband users clamouring for an upgrade that needs a Samsung or SACM.
