browse to http://192.168.100.1/ and login with username and password both as root.

There it will show the name of the configuration file, which tells you the speed. I am not sure what the names of the files are nowadays, but it should be quite obvious whether it is 1 or 2 meg.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think that ntl say that it is UPTO 1meg so 975 is in with what you are paying.

I'm Paying for 2meg

my advice would be to speak to customer service, as tech support cannot make any changes to the billing (ie won't be able to refund the time this has been going on, make package changes to correct this etc etc)

Customer Service = 0800 052 2000 :) option 5 is probably your best bet

OP checked modem configuration and posted:

...and heres my modem details
Cable Modem Operation ConfigurationNetwork Access : AllowedMaximum Downstream Data Rate : 1024000Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 100000Maximum Upstream Channel Burst : 1600Maximum Number of CPEs : 1

That means the modem has been configured for 1Mb. It's a 1Mb service. OP is supposed to be on the 2MB service.

I found exactly the same thing happening. My bill this month is £50 less than usual due to all the 2meg money they took.

I was told that my old PACE box couldn't be upgraded and they had run out of the upgradable Samsung ones. A phone call last week got me a call from the engineer with a brand new box, a 2 meg connection and my bill back up to what it's been for the previous 6 months.

They should have known better, but so should I.

I hope it all goes well on 31 Jan.

NTL cable guy is installing a Samsung STB. The PACE box is not upgradeable to 2 meg, so I'm told.

I would of asked for a SACM as the Samsung can't do 10mb.

Hi,
From what I've seen here, the SACM can't do 10meg consistently as it all depends on the load locally. I know that where I live there may be only a few on NTL broadband, but I am quite happy with what I have.

I was just upset that I was being charged 2meg money for a 1 meg service. I now have a nice Samsung box, silver like my TV/DVD/VCR and I get:

Tue, 31 Jan 2006 11:42:04 UTC

1st 512K took 2485 ms = 206 KB/sec, approx 1697 Kbps, 1.66 Mbps
2nd 512K took 2437 ms = 210.1 KB/sec, approx 1731 Kbps, 1.69 Mbps
3rd 512K took 2422 ms = 211.4 KB/sec, approx 1742 Kbps, 1.7 Mbps
4th 512K took 2156 ms = 237.5 KB/sec, approx 1957 Kbps, 1.91 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1782 Kbps, 1.74 Mbps

which is twice as fast as I had this morning. I downloaded a 130meg file at 238Kbs, maxing at 245Kbs. This is fine for me.

The setup didn't go too smoothly as the engineer's Fujitsu laptop was refusing to boot and it took a couple of calls and two reboots to get my packages on. Also had to tell the box about my PC.

Now, 2 hours later Iam quite pleased that everything is OK. I got just what I wanted. :)

Im on 2 meg and I get less than that .7 meg last night.
Upgraded to 2 meg now less than 1.
It was between 1 and 2 meg but half the sites were unavailable or corrupted such as Ebay.
Phoned CS got India but they fixed it with a Proxy but now it is so slow its unreal .7meg last night and it feels slower.
Only NTL can deliver downgrades for upgrade prices they say things will improve but Ive been with NTL for over 5 years and sometimes the service is as they advertise but mostly its not and NTL know it. Latest in a long line of excuses is congested areas, well Im less than 3 miles from NTL in Llansamlet Swansea with their new buildings and big dishes and the servics is pants.

That sounds really bad. I have had words with a nice Indian sounding lady at CS, when I found myself having to register from scratch. She got me to clear all my internet cookies, files and history. My old password (5 years old now) was defunct, so she sent a new one through the system, and stayed with me through a router reboot. Very methodical and very accurate. All she told me worked perfectly.

Apart from the odd outage due to a guy with a spade, I have always been within 10% of theoretical max speed. I can download at 235 to 250 consistently on the 2 meg service. Sounds like you have a problem. Yeah, that's useful!

I heard that ZoneAlarm can cap a throughput remarkably. Did you ever get a good speed?
