I first came across the word 'crimbo' a fair number of years ago. So, would any care to give a brief etymology of it.
It's a shorter, lazy version of 'Christmas'.
End of thread?? :D

By no means! How do you manage to convert Christmas into crimbo?
And how do you manage to conevert Terry into Tel and what is Del derived from?
It's because people prefer abbreviated words to end in a harder, percussive manner. The name Tel 'stops' better than the correct shorter version of "Ter".
The ending of "Chris" isn't as percusive as some people would like so a 'harder' end to it was added :)
And Del...here's a clue: Derrick Trotter gets called it ;)
I can't understand how 'Robert' becomes 'Bob'

I can't understand how 'Robert' becomes 'Bob'
- or how 'Bob' is always really a female, disguised as the cabin boy?:D
- "crimbo" is horrible, in my opinion

In our house, Robert becomes Bobster ... but that's 'cos it's cuter, like him :)
