not really rancid but most people i tell seem to think its an odd combination.

egg, bacon, sausage, cheese, black pudding, tomato ketchup in crusty bread.

makes a great sandwich and fills you up. don't know what you're missing until you try it.

jam and peanut butter sandwiches! yummy.

I have dutch roots, so I also LOVE these dutch sweets called 'dropjes'. They're basically liquorice with salt in them. the more salt, the better. you can get ones called 'double zout dropjes' - they're the daddy sweets!!!

I don't know ANY fully english people who like them. The only people that accept my offer of them are those who have NO idea what they are (so they sniff them lots first) or my old manager, who is from belgium, thus she knows what they are!!!!

a friend of mine uses sweets like that to make an alcoholic drink (with Polish Spirit) - he calls it 'Black Pig' - warms you up on a cold day.

My 'midnight snack' last night was cold tinned garden peas with Thai fish sauce.;)

weatabix and margarine :)

this might change that.....

The difference between margarine and butter?

Both have the same amount of calories. Butter is slightly higher in
saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.

Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over
eating the same amount of butter according to a recent Harvard Medical
Study.

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in
other foods.
Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only
because they are added!

Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the
flavors of other foods.

Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around
for less than 100 years.

Now for Margarine...
Very high in Trans Fatty Acids... Triple risk of Coronary Heart
Disease...

Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol)

Lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol) Increases the risk
of cancers by up to five fold...

Lowers quality of breast milk ... Decreases immune response...

Decreases insulin response. And here is the most disturbing fact....

HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC...
This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life
and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is
added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

YOU can try this yourself: purchase a tub of margarine and leave it
in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note
a couple of things: no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it
(that should tell you something) ... it does not rot or smell differently...
because it has no nutritional value, nothing will grow on it...
even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow.

Why? Because it is nearly plastic.
Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

I don't know what the article you quoted was getting at here - hydrogenating a fat makes it an hydrogenated fat, not 'plastic'. Plastic is a polymer - long chains of similar molecules joined together, hydrogenation does not increase the length of the fatty acid molecules, it just "saturates" the double bonds & turns them into single ones - hence lowering the melting point. (the first plastic invented was made from milk btw;) - google on casein plastic)

- butter also contains trans fatty acids, just not as much as margarine.

- at the end of the day, butter is better just because it tastes so much nicer than margarine:)

agreed. I've never taken to margarine. It makes the toast go really soggy, which is rubbish when trying to spread lashings of marmite on it!!!!!

You want gut-wrenching? Well, I once ordered a fish stew at a restaurant in Madeira and it (the stew, not the restaurant) had whole baby squids (or possibly octopuses, I didn't count the number of tentacles) floating in it. I surprised myself by eating (and enjoying) them.
