just a thought, is sending email from an external client (thunderbird in this case) via smtp.ntlworld.com restricted to the NTL ip-address range in a similar way to the fact that you can't ftp to your webspace externally?

i'm sure i've been able to do this in the past, can any NTL guru's confirm this for me?

You can only use the NTL smtp server to send mail from an NTL IP address, the client you use is not relevant.
