When you play DVDs the background music is louder than the actual dialogue (talking and sound effects)?
Do you have the DVD player hooked up to a surround sound system or straight to TV?
One other thing.
Are you connecting via scart? You may want to try using the standard audio out leads as there are a few posts on newsgroups complaining about audio levels when output through the scart lead.
Scart lead only straight to my stereo TV

Try disabling the Dolby Prologic mode unless you have a prologic TV
Whats Prologic i will have to see if my tv has that
Can you connect the DVD to your TV via another cable? I think this unit has a choice of connections you can use. Can you use the analogue audio outputs

It may resolve the problem. If not what TV are you connecting to?
I have somr leads to try that later i will have to dig them out The only prob is those connections are on the front of the tele
The TV is a Panasonic Four year old
Will help to pipnpoint if the scart connection is the problem even if it looks horrible
