View Full Version : Licourice & blood pressure pils a warning
If anyone out there is take blood pressure pills and loves eating Licourice, becareful.
Blood pressure pills help get rid of salt in the blood but an ingrediant in Licourice counteracts this, I don't know if this affects all brand/types of blood pressure pills, but it does affect the ones my mum uses,
Is this a new warning that's been released or a conclusion of a [independant] study?
Link?
I heard/read this a few months ago, my mum had a check up to day at hospital and asked the doctor
I'll try and find a link

Because glycyrrhizic acid allows cortisol to stick around in the distal tubules of the kidney, cortisol binds to a protein that causes the kidney to retain sodium longer than it normally would, increasing blood pressure. Other effects of high licorice consumption include water retention, headaches, lethargy, and, in massive amounts, heart failure.

Except for liquorice allsorts, it is difficult to find any liquorice containing sweets in mainstream shops. When is the last time you saw a packet of Pontefract Cakes in, say, Sainsburys?
That makes me think why they introduced allsorts without the licorice
Google ads strikes again... Find out what a doctor says about your weight and condition... :erm:
