Is anyone else in SE London getting slow browsing tonight?
Did anyone have to reboot their stb tonight?
Also, is the speedtest on the .co.uk front page dead atm or is it just me?

I'm down on the South Coast just along from Portsmouth and BB seems to have died.I couldn't get to any web pages at all for the last hour despite rebooting the STB twice.I've had to give up and resort to GULP.......dial up.At the moment it's faster than my 150k connection.

Does anyone know where the service status section has gone?I can't even check if there is a local or general problem.

Jeez this is like wading through treacle.I may give up until tomorrow am.

Incog. :grind:

On internet explorer, go to internet options, the connection tab click the LAN settings buttons fill in the boxes near the bottom.

For mozilla go to options and connections/proxies.

My speeds are fine. As far as I know DNS shouldn't affect bandwidth speed (only the time to make the initial contact) I think you may have a different problem there.

Scheduled Maintenance w/c 13/10/03
As part of the ongoing project to maintain and upgrade our cable network, there is a requirement to carry out work on components which may result in a loss of service for the duration of the work.

On the morning of Tuesday 14th October between midnight and 6am, the following work will take place:-

New ntl:Home broadband customers attempting to register for the service will be unable to complete registration during this time due to essential database maintenance.

Maintenance on our DNS platform may result in degraded dns performance during the maintenance window. This may result in slow access to web pages, email and other services utilising dns.

ntl:Home Broadband customers in the Ware, Southampton, Derby, Port Talbot, Newark, Huddersfield, Stockton, Eastwood and Luton may lose service for approximately 30 minutes.

On the morning of Tuesday the 14th, Wednesday 15th and Thursday the 16th October between midnight and 6am, ntl:Home Broadband customers nationwide may lose service briefly due to network optimisation and configuration changes.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience these planned works may cause.

Was really bad between 7.00 and 9.00 tonight and this in the N/West with no proxies. Had to resort to Zen dialup which seemed quite fast compared with BB at the time. Now seems to be working, but still slow.

Mine was like treacle for nthw at about 7pm, with some sites failing to load altogether. Switched on the proxy suggested by Dupre in the DNS outages thread and things improved a lot; added the alternative DNS suggested by dellwear in this thread and it's flying. It's not been so good for months, even when it was allegedly fault free.

Thanks a bunch, ntl. What am I paying you for exactly?

How do you change the DNS?

I'm using a Mac with Safari browser, so anything I tell you is unlikely to be of much use ... can anyone else offer some Windoze help here?

For anyone using a Mac with OSX, open System Preferences, then click the Network icon, and in the first tab (TCP/IP), in the box labelled DNS Servers (optional), type 158.152.1.43 then click Apply Now at the bottom of the pane.

Hey presto ...

If you were using a site (like this one) before the problem started the site DNS would remain in your cache, this would mean that it would work until you quit the program or rebooted the computer or something. That's what happened with me at least.

Try removing the new proxy or DNS settings

You've got to be kidding!

My web pages load faster now with the DNS supplied by dellwear than they did before these 'problems' began. I think I'll be sticking with what I've got.

a) Whats a tracert?
z) What could be easier than clicking on the speedtest button on the main page?

Saneboy13

a) Whats a tracert?
z) What could be easier than clicking on the speedtest button on the main page?tracert....if you open command prompt and enter! tracert www.bbc.co.uk (http://www.bbc.co.uk/) for example, it will give you all the "hops" you take to connect to the bbc web site. I know it will not give you speed readings as you know them, but it will tell you where, if any, of the UBR's are acting up along the way.

As I said, I know it will not tell you your up/down load speeds, but it gives you a better idea of where the problems are

Chris

a) Whats a tracert?
z) What could be easier than clicking on the speedtest button on the main page?

a) Geek heaven ... a command line tool that traces a route across the internet from your PC to a website you specify and tells you how long the hop from computer to computer took along the way.

z) Nothing could be easier than using the nice utility on the nthw homepage. But command lines are fun (for some people anyway).

Me, I open my Utilities folder and run Traceroute through my Network Utilities application. But don't listen to me, I only use an inconvenient Mac. ;) :D
