Disaster movies have always been part of the film world so what are people's favourite disaster movies?

Agreed Hugh, followed closely behind by The Towering Inferno.

Hollywood produced some absolute bangers in the 1970s. Poseidon and Towering Inferno would be at the top of my list. Also Airplane which is way better than any of the films it’s sending up. :D

and there was the excellent Airport series, especially Airport 75 and Airport 77.

I remember going out to see the Towering Inferno at the cinema in Jo'burg for my birthday. We went out for a curry at a restaurant called the East African Pavilion where my friend and I enjoyed a hot curry and little too much wine (we would have only been 11 or so at the time).

Earthquake. Gives the 100Watt sub-woofer a workout.

Chuck makes the wrong choice at the end IMHO.

He has the choice of staying with his bit on the side (Genevieve Boujold) or going back down into the flooded storm drain to go after his nasty wife (Ava Gardner) and certain death. He goes back down the drain

Chuck’s choice is limited by the Hollywood rule book. There are certain things blockbuster heroes do, and things they just don’t do.

I guessed as much.

It was an excellent remake but it just doesn't have the charm of the original.
