Once Upon a time in America I think most likely candidate the ben Hur. Listed runtime for OUATIA is 4 hours 11 minutes so Netflix must have cut it as it is 3 hours 49 minutes. Ben Hur is 3 hours 42 minutes

You need to see it to believe how dull it is and it's in Persian/ Farsi or something so has subtitles, Spoiler Alert

Hassan's cow dies whilst he's away from the village and the villagers don't know what to do for the best, 'tell him it ran away' was the only highlight amongst their suggestions

Why did you watch it ?

Wanted to see what happened when Hassan got home, the villagers had bigged it up a lot after all

Spoiler Alert Hassan loses the plot and starts eating hay, wtf :spin:

Titanic (3 Hours 14 Minutes)

If you exclude the modern-day parts of the film such as them on the boat looking for the necklace with the older Rose and the credits then the time spent in 1912 - the bits on the Titanic itself essentially - it's 2 hours 40 mins which is the time it took the Titanic to sink in real life.

Ffs, use a spoiler tag, you've ruined the film for me now, the boat sinks  :)

I've seen a large number of really long films. Titanic being one of them.

The Zack Snyder cut of Justice League is probably one of the longest. At 4 hours 2 mins.

For me it’s probably Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, special edition. Don’t know whether it ever got even a limited theatrical release but I have all three extended films on DVD. RotK is 4h 10m.

I once had to sit through the Sound of Music with my ex wife when I was married.

I almost died of boredom.

Not seen Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Dude? You haven't lived ;)I saw it for a few mins at someones house I went to visit a couple weeks ago. They were watching it on one of those flat screen things and to me it looked disgusting, didnt even look real!!

If I see that movie,I wanna see it in analogue on a beautiful CRT set :)

They must have a cheap 'flat screen thing'

Films look incredible on my 55" 4k UHD Samsung QLED. Especially when films have HDR they look so life like and real.

TV ? Modern rubbish.

I'd have thought you'd want to see it at the local Picture House . You never know, there might be an organ player ;)

We still use CRT for our main set and until we really need to can't see a reason to change. (That need is likely to be more about plugging things in than the set breaking. Can't see need for much bigger than our 28" but the smaller sets now aren't very good, usually poor sound even if OK picture.)

I don't think PQ is why yhey still use it. Just that it still works and no need to replace it.

Chris
15-11-2022, 17:31
Excellent.. Dont you agree the pic is gorgous??

No it isn’t.

It’s dim, low resolution, makes a high-pitched electronic hiss, takes up a big chunk of the corner of the living room and uses a smeg-load of electricity. It’s also got ridiculously high-voltage innards and when it gets really old it’ll become a fire risk.

CRT screens have particular characteristics you may look for because you’re a nostalgia obsessive but they aren’t gorgeous by any objective measure.

The only reason we got rid of our 28" CRT was the tube went in it. We then managed to get a good deal on a 4K Smart Toshiba 47" TV which was at the end of the Football season in Staples at the time that's how long ago we bought it and touch wood its still going great.

We use it with a FreesatHD box and picture is more than acceptable for us.

The picture is great unless coming from one of our HDMI devices via adaptor then it's adequate. We will keep until we need or really want to swap but with increase in bills likely delayed.
One issue is what to change it for. Reviews on smaller screens tend not to be brilliant or sound or something and by smaller I mean less than 50" which would be close to four times the size of what we currently have (28"). Since my wife normally sits less than a metre from set a big screen isn't helpful.

Chris
18-11-2022, 11:10
You can get a decent 4K TV around the 40” mark. Remember there’s no massive casing with a flat panel TV so you can fit a much larger screen in the same corner of your living room because it can sit further back.

You just don’t get decent speakers on modern TVs because the primary factor driving design is best possible picture quality in the smallest possible casing. Despite advances in technology there’s still a connection between the richness of sound and the size of the speakers producing it. However a sound bar will sit comfortably beneath the TV and even a fairly modest one will sound a lot better than the built-in speakers on almost any CRT TV ever made.

Chris

2h 8m apparently. At the time, anything over 2 hours would have been considered a very long film. But at least if you saw it in a cinema you didn’t walk alone …
