Due to coronavirus many of this year's films have been delayed and put back multiple times and as such the list features many films with a 2021 release date. This is by no means a comprehensive list of next year's releases and only features films which should have been released this year and have been put back to next year or beyond due to coronavirus.

This list is a collaborative effort so if you think I have missed something or there is a film you think may be of interest to the wider community mention it below and I will add it to the list.

Dates are subject to change and I will do my best to update them as I notice them. There was one film this year that was brought forward three months and at least three that were originally planned for this year and have been bumped to next year. I had Indiana Jones 5 on my list for next year and it has already been pushed back to 2021.

Once we get into the new year I'll unstick the current 2019 thread and make this sticky so it is more accessible. New trailers will be added every week as they are released so keep coming back and checking for updates :)

me too, horrors don't appeal to me at all, they are all about less story and more thrill. The only ones I have watched and enjoyed are the Scream films and I Know What You Did Last Summer. I gave Bright Burn the benefit of doubt last year and it was just your typical horror movie dressed up as scifi/superman. I won't be making the same mistake again.

Black Widow is the one l am looking forward to the most , Top Gun will have to go some to beat the original with Tom Cruise in it , Mulan will be interesting in live action form , Fast and Furious has got stick on the same record IMO , Minions is more of the same , The Invisible Man takes me back to a certain David McCallum :) and No time to Die looks like another excellent 007 film.

yup, and tbh I don't mind at all. The films aren't mind blowing in terms of the story but they are just excellent popcorn movies, great to watch at the cinema and the more recent ones are developing the characters more and becoming more than just action flicks. I really enjoy them.

I agree 100% Black Widow is the one I'm looking forward to.
I am trying not to think about Black Widow too much because I want to be blown away. The one I am looking forward to the most in the short term is Mulan. I think it is easily going to gross over $1bn. Not only is it going to do ell generally because it is Disney, but it is going to pull in the Chinese market as well because of the story.
These are the films in rough order which I am most looking forward to this year:

Black Widow
Eternals
Wonder Woman
Mulan
Ghostbusters
Fast 9
The King's Man
Tenet
Dune
Bill & Ted
The Invisible Man

Me too, I feel like I have been throwing money down the drain this year because I am paying for my limitless subscription and I haven't been to the cinema yet. There literally isn't anything on I want to watch. Two films which should have been out this month and in March have been put back till the end of the year so the first proper film I want to watch at the cinema is Mulan at the end of March. Call of the Wild is out now but I would be going to see it for the sake of it, it isn't something which I think you would benefit from seeing at the cinema.

Yes but there is a hidden "bonus". Some series which may have been cancelled may get a continustion purely because the pilots for new ones will not have been produced and seen at the upfronts though those available may be online events.

NBCUniversal, CBS and WarnerMedia have all canceled their May events and instead will present some sort of digital versions of their pitches to the ad community. In an unprecedented move, NBCU will also televise their event.

AMC Networks and Fox News have outwardly canceled their presentations, while Comcast’s FreeWheel postponed its event.

And the IAB is recommending all NewFront presenters scrap in-person events for streaming-only presentations. YouTube, Twitter and Roku, among others, are heeding this advice with plans to stream their events.

I am going to keep the thread open so people can discuss this year's movies and post new information as and when it becomes available but there aren't going to be any major updates or (probably) new trailers for the next few months. Release dates are constantly being pushed and there are many films which have been pushed twice already, firstly to the end of this year and now into the beginning of next year. As things get back to normal and dates look more concrete I'll update the list and probably doing a list rolling into next year so everyone can see where this year's expected releases have landed and know when to expect them.

Black Widow set to reach UK cinemas a week earlier than in the US

The first instalment in Marvel Phase 4 will now reach cinemas on October 28 – should cinemas be open by then. Over in the United States, Black Widow remains set for release on November 6, having originally been due in cinemas in early May.

Early release aside, I think Black Widow in general is going to benefit from the lockdown massively. It was going to be popular anyway but perhaps not as much as some of the other MCU films but I think it is going to get a bit of a bump from the lockdown. As the cinemas have been closed for so long I think people are going to be gagging to go to the cinema so much that a) people who wouldn't normally go to the cinema will go just for something different to do and get them out of the house b) people who do go to the cinema who weren't too bothered about this (as some forum users have said themselves) will go and see it and c) people who were going to see it anyway will go and see it more than once.

Long story short I think it is going to beat projections by 10%-15% and I am going to play little game and predict a $1.5bn boxoffice revenue.

I want cinemas to open
me too and I was hoping something was going to be announced next week during the next review but I can't see it happening tbh. I think cinemas are the easiest of leisure venues to open up as you can you very easily force a structured queue system within the building and outside and they can obviously block off the seating inside. It is too soon though as they still haven't opened schools or any other venues and they need to do one at a time and wait a minimum of 3-4 weeks to see if infection rates go up before they can make further decisions.

Paul
22-05-2020, 18:45
We didnt have queues much at our cinema in recent times anyway - as all seats have to be booked, and most people did that before turning up.

General Maximus
22-05-2020, 19:08
I was thinking more of the queues, especially in the evening, for food for movies like Tenet which are upcoming. When you get the big releases, people want to enjoy themselves and you get lengthy queues for popcorn, nachose, ice cream etc.

Cineworld to re-open cinemas next month, presumably to coincide with the governments proposed 4th July target. It shouldn't be a problem and cinemas should easily be able to open before pubs and restaurants. They can restrict seats to alternate rows and columns. Queuing is already in place in my cinema for food and drink, they just need to put some markers down on the floor to indicate 2 meters, which will probably be changing to 1 meter anyway next week. Let's hope Odeon follows suite pronto.

It is a shame Tenet has been delayed until the end of July. I am hoping they are going to bring back from MCU films and other blockbusters to kick things off with a bang. Odeon to start opening cinemas from 4th July. Only 10 cinemas will open initially with a phased reopening of all cinemas over the following weeks. Check the link below to see when your cinema will be opening. I am disappointed that they haven't planned some fantastic films to encourage people back to the cinema. The few films that are planned are average and mediocre at best. What will be worth the trip is Empire Strikes Back. Shame they didn't plan to do a triple bill of the original trilogy because that would have been very popular.

How is it delayed indefinitely, if they have provided a new date of 16th Decemeber 2022.

To be honest I think they should start releasing new films digitally like Bill and Ted 3 instead of simply delaying them

Given that Avatar 2 was originally aiming for a 2014 release the many dates they have given up to now for its release date have not exactly come to fruition.

yeah it is doing my flipping head in now and I have had enough. If they are not careful people are just going to give up and not bother with it. I am sick and tired of looking forward to it just for them to constantly keep putting the release date back.

Tenet will open internationally before the US.

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/07/27/media/tenet-international-release/index.html

Overseas audiences will have a chance to uncover the mysteries of "Tenet" before moviegoers in the United States.

The new thriller from director Christopher Nolan will open internationally on August 26, Warner Bros. said on Monday. The film will then be released a week later in the United States for the Labor Day weekend opening on September 3.

"Tenet," which has been delayed multiple times because of coronavirus, will open in 70 countries starting on August 26. Some of the major countries include Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom.

Mulan going straight to Disney+.

https://screencrush.com/mulan-disney-plus-release/?utm_source=sailthru&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=newsletter_21107530

In this case, the observers were wrong, as Disney announced today that the film would premiere on Disney+ on September 4 the same day it opens in theaters — in markets where theaters are open for business.

In a first for Disney+, though, Mulan will not be available to subscribers as part of the service’s regular programming; instead it will cost an additional $29.99 to watch the film. (According to reports, once customers pay to watch Mulan they will have “access to the film for as long as they remain subscribers to the service.”) One can assume that at some later date, the film will be made available as part of the Disney+ monthly subscription fee, but Disney offered no timeline for that.)

that's really funny. I was talking to somebody at work yesterday about this year's releases and the constant put backs and delays. I said I don't understand why Disney don't put Mulan on Disney+ because it would be fantastic publicity for the service and compliment Star Wars/The Mandarlorian and the MCU with an injection ongoing high quality content.

I know Odeon started opening some of the cinemas at the beginning of July. The majority of them were supposed to open over a two week period with all cinemas open by the end of July. They had a change of heart and this didn't happen. I suspect it was due to Tenet and Mulan etc being further delayed. I have just checked my cinema and it is reopening on Wednesday 26th July for Tenet's release and I imagine the rest of them will be as well. Tickets are already up for advanced booking and they are going nicely :)

I have found a list of which cinema are currently open and when the ones which are currently closed are planning to reopen if you need to check:

I was in bed on my phone and only edit stuff on my pc where I can use a mouse to scroll and highlight, cut and paste etc etc. I'll take a look at it when I have woken up but I thought the same, I suspect it is being released in the US a week prior to the UK.

Edit: Just had a look and it is mixed messages. Everywhere still says 4th September apart from the Radio Times but their article was written on 12th August so how could they know? I won't change the date for now and I'll keep my eyes on the Odeon website for an update. Bizarrely all the showing times are up for next week apart from Friday. As soon as they update Friday's showing times we'll know whether it is coming out or not.

As a side note, cinemas are reopening for Tenet's release next week and there are lots of other films to watch as well. When cinemas reopened I was hoping they would take advantage of the opportunity of not having any new films to watch to show some old blockbusters. They could keep themselves busy for months showing the Terminators, Aliens, MCU, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Independence Day.........all those huge blockbusters from the last 30 years or so. I don't know what the long term plan is but they are doing better than what was originally advertised (which was carp). There are many films to choose from atm but the highlights for me are Star Wars ep 5, Jurassic Park and Inception. I have booked my ticket for Tenet for next Wednesday and I am going to see Jurassic Park on Sunday. I can remember watching Jurassic Park when it was first released, it was made for the cinema and the experience is going to be amazing.

Odeon and the other cinema chains need to pull their finger out and come up with a decent schedule of old blockbusters for us to watch otherwise there is no point in them staying open.

Stephen

All the big film companies delaying films are going to cause cinema companies to go bust if they keep delaying films to next year.

They will then have no choice but to offer online downloads as there will be nowhere to show them.

Disney should put Black Widow on Disney+. It would demonstrate continued support of the service with high profile content. If Marvel keep delaying their release schedule we'll end up with one film a month in 2022.

Not sure if said already but this has now made for a cracking 2021. Movie congestion, great for the consumer, likely terrible for the studio. :D

If I was running Cinema chains, I'd be getting some promotions on the go in anticipation, although a Cinema sub/pass doesn't seem like a bad shout for 2021.

I do wonder if we'll see even more reshuffling, less to covid but more for the congestion it's causing.

I hope so because continuous delays will only work for so long and can't be done indefinitely. You can only build up so much of a back log before the release schedule becomes unviable. Some people like me/your die hard movie fans will go to the cinema every week if they pushed a blockbuster out every week due to this year's delays however the majority of people haven't got the time and/or money. Even if you release 4 massive films in a month, Joe Bloggs will only want to see one and the other three will lose out. So either way things aren't going to go as hoped for by the studios and if I was Disney for example, I would be looking at next year's schedule and thinking about which movies (Disney and MCU) I want to release at the cinema and what might be better as pay per view.

I'm a die hard cinema goer too. I've had my Unlimited card since 2008. I was last at Cineworld the day they closed to see Akira 4k. I've been gutted at all the delays. I, when working would go on my days off to see a couple of films and since stopped working I used to go a couple of days a week.

As well as the massive backlog of movies there is also the effect of people loosing interest in films that should have been out and they were looking forward too. Films like Ghpstbusters Afterlife, it had a trailer and all the toys and merchandise were starting to come out. Now its delayed till next March I think. They will have to try hard to get people back on board as many studies may have already spent their budgets for advertising and merchandise etc.

It looks like Coming 2 America has already been moved to Amazon and so will not probably get its December cinema release. How many other movies will follow a similar route I wonder. Soul is another that is now set for streaming rather than big screen release. I wonder if Disney will do the same with some of the MCU such as Black Widow.

yeah they need to, I can't think of a more important franchise where you need to keep the momentum and excitement going between movies. I know they were probably hoping for $1bn plus for ScarJo's debut but they need to bite the bullet and move on and look forward to next year. You can't have all these years or 2-3 MCU films a year and then nothing all of a sudden.

I think films like Black Widow and No Time to Die will be the last to drop onto VOD. They won't be the films are risk from too many films being out in 2021. Films like Last Night in Soho and Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch will be more at risk from attracting a wider audience than the fanbase already built into those directors' films.

The profits are too much to turn down and it's still not clear how well these movies will do on VOD. Remember one purchase can be shared amongst many (a friendship group of 4/5/6 seeing it pays one time even if it's more than a cinema ticket) and it doesn't generate the same level of buzz and excitement an occasion movie does without that feeling of going somewhere to see it.

Back to the Future is in Odeon cinemas this weekend to celebrate the 35th anniversary. I'll defo be going, I was too young to watch films like this when they were first released so it is great to have the opportunity to see it on the big screen. Cineworld had BTTF a few weeks ago. I've seen it on the big screen a couple of times recently. The 30th and 35th anniversaries. Same with Ghostbusters.

I used to love Cineworld as each month they used to show a series of classic movies. In the last 5 years I saw T2, Blues Brothers, Close Encounters. Blade Runner. From Russia with love. Among others.

yeah, this year has been the worst year since in about 30 years for cinema going for me. The only three new films I have been to see are 1917 (which was only for the Oscars), Onward and Tenet. I have also been to see Jurassic Park, Back to the Future and Tenet. The last time I went to the cinema 6 times in a year must have been when I was 10 or younger. The sad thing is that I think this is going to roll well into next year and I don't see how the studios can keep pushing back films because as we have discussed previously, there are only so many new films you can push out in a given time period which people will go and see. Disney might want to hold onto the MCU films for massive releases at the cinema but I think they should take a serious look at putting Death on the Nile on Disney+. MGM even shopped No Time To Die for streaming but nobody wanted to cough up $600m for it.
