Hi

After having my phone and broadband installed, i now want to rearrange where i place my shub, i don't want to run the cable inside the house and was wondering how easy is to tap off from the black box on the outside wall and what is the best cable to use for the extention.

Cheers steve

You would need triple screened coax such as Webro 100 (http://www.aerialshack.com/100m-webro-hd100-triple-screened-coax-cable-p-1287.html). You can get this in various lengths from eBay. One thing you should bear in mind is that the signal levels at your installation have been optimised for the length of cable you use now, so any alteration to this could result in deterioration or loss of service. It also contravines Virgins t&c's to alter the cables. The isloator in the white box on your inside wall will also have to be moved, as it is a vital piece of safety equipment.

The cost for Virgin to do this is £99

thanks for that, i wasthinking of leaving the white box where it is incase i want to use it at a later date, but was wondering if it was possable to spur straight from the box on the ouside wall and enter the house at a different location and plug into the shub.

thanks steve

When I had my installation done, I asked the engineer to put the phone by the front of the house, the TV by the back, and the broadband upstairs. All the cables ran outside of the house. I now have the modem/hub/router near the ceiling in an upstairs bedroom, with cat5 cable going into the loft and from there to other rooms in the house.

I'm very glad I decided to do this.

Adding a splitter (and you also need a specialised one of these, as it needs to pass signal both ways) also increases the resistance in the cable run. I would say DIYing using this method would be asking for trouble.
