My TV has a DVI input socket but no HDMI.

Q Can I get a HDMI to DVI cable that would do audio as well, or will I need to buy two separate cables?

I want to come out of the Virgin+HD Box to a TV in the bedroom

Thanks

DVI is HDMI without audio Dave. If your TV has optical in then a spdif cable will do the trick for sound. If the TV doesn't but has red/white phono inputs then you'll need an optical to phono converter. This will do the trick: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Optical-Coaxial-Toslink-Converter/dp/B0074JZ8ZW/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1341324645&sr=1-1
Hope that helps, if not post a link to your TV manual and I'll try to help further :)

DVI can carry audio fine, but needs a device that supports audio over DVI.

The cable is irrelevant. The question is your TV can do.

I had a similar issue, an old HDTV without HDMI, but has DVI (HDCP capable).

I used the following equipment:

1. DVI Male to HDMI Female Adapter (connected to the TV's DVI input):

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200750354354?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_1965wt_1396

2. A cheap HDMI Cable (to connect the Samsung V+'s HDMI out, to the HDMI in of the DVI to HDMI adapter)

3. RCA to Scart Out Connector (Plugged-in to the VCR SCART connector of the Samsung V+, to provide analogue stereo audio out)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/270570346805?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_2392wt_1396

4. A Ground Loop Isolator (you might not need one, but I did as I was experiencing ground noise/buzz from the VCR SCART's audio out. Plugged in to the RCA to Scart Out Connector)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300658494420?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_500wt_1180

5. A Stereo Phono/RCA cable (to connect the Ground Loop Isolator to the TV's audio in, to provide Stereo Analogue Audio.

The total cost of the adapters, isolator, and cables was less than £15 delivered (from eBay).

To use the V+ with your TV's DVI input, your TV must support HDCP, or the V+ will not display the picture properly, possibly no picture at all. The DVI in port on my TV has HDCP written next to it, if yours does not, check the user manual for your TV.

If you have an Scientific Atlanta V+ box rather than a Samsung, you won't need a RCA to Scart Out Connector, or probably the Ground Loop Isolator, as Scientific Atlanta V+'s features Stereo Analogue RCA/Phono out.

I wouldn't bother with a basic Optical to Phono Converter, they are more expensive than a SCART adaptor, and probably won't work with 5.1 audio which is used on HD channels (i.e. BBC HD).

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that, i opted for the easy solution, bought 2x10m v1.3a HDMI leads, at £13 each, could have gone cheaper but these are 26awg a 2way HDMI splitter was £49 now £24 from neet, a new 22" white sony LED with every conceivable connection and 2 hdmi which was reduced from £289 to £139 at argos and a habitat designer tilt and swivel wall bracket from £69 to £6.99 also threw in 2x 90 degree HDMI angle connectors just in case, for £1.99 each good old amazon and argos

Now we wait...
