just wondering what modulation like qam256 or 64 means and why some people need 4 channels vs 8 etc?

genuinely interested

im on qam256 with 4 channels

qam 256 more bandwidth than qam64. 8 channels will be the amount of channels everyone has when the rollout is done, people started at 4, some now have 5 or 6, and will move to 8 when rollout is complete

any advantage to more channels or is it for future speeds like 200mb+?

Basically, your group of channels is shared between a set of users. Each qam256 channel gives about 50mb of useable data, by bonding 4 channels you get 200mb of data, this is the downstream bandwidth for one set of users (some 250) as each user can use either 30, 50, 60 or,100mb of the shared bandwidth, the network becomes higher utilized. This is why more channels are bonded, to allow for more shared bandwidth, allowing for higher end user speeds

without going in to too much detail the QAM rating determines the speed of each channel. QAM64 is slower then QAM 256 and QAM1024 is faster than QAM256. But, increasing the QAM rating requires VM make their network squeeky clean for noise and provide perfect power levels which would be very hard for them to do. So it is easier for them to cheat a bit and instead of increasing the speed of each channel, they just let you use more channels. That is why they are forcing the shub on everyone; it is capable of using 8 bonded channels. They might keep it going for the initial rollout of 200mbit (8x50=400 so the shub can technically do around 400mbit) but we all know that the shub falls over now as soon as it is put under any pressure so I would think they would start looking at modems with 16 channels in the not too distant future.

... we all know that the shub falls over now as soon as it is put under any pressure...You think that. I think that but some here will still insist that it is fine.
..I would think they would start looking at modems with 16 channels in the not too distant future. You think so? I think they'll persist with hubs. They must be very very keen on hubs to have persisted with the Superhub in the face of all the evidence that it has many faults.

not true, I started off with 3

i think they'll continue with shubs as well, i think they'll start looking at 16 channels versions though next year

yeah fair enough, depends on whether using a uBR or BSR, my apologies

Not as if it waas entirely accurate anyway, lol I was trying to explain in simple terms :)
