Hey guys,

I'm on Virgin 50mb and have some issues with the superhub stop responding to requests trying to get into the configuration, so was thinking about putting it in modem mode and getting another router to do the WLAN stuff.

So my question is what is a good one to get? I was looking at some linksys stuff but they do get rather pricey, so was wondering what you guys use and can recommend?

Cheers!

cheap d link 615 on ebay.. around a tenna.

high end router? depends how much you got and what you need. the 615 might be enough for you needs.

I was looking at some TP link ones but worried the wireless strength is even worse than the superhub which barely manage to beem a signal upstairs...TP-Link 300Mbps Wireless-N Gigabit Router for £45 should do the trick I suppose might just order one up.

Or save £40 and get the DIR-615 which does all the same stuff sans the gigabit.

True dont really need gigabit functionality the way im hooked up at the moment, altho could be handy to have it TP link does a cheaper model for £22. No point spending to much money as the new wireless standard isn't far away.

sorry for coming in on this so late but you was heading in the right direction to start off with dude. Linksys are super duper fantastic, I have always had linksys routers. There is a reason they are a few £££ more (apart from having a nice Cisco logo on them) and that is because they kick ass.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Linksys-E1500-Wireless-N-Router-SpeedBoost/dp/B005PMBV9M/ref=pd_cp_computers_0

You can also go for the E1200 or E1000 which are £5 cheaper

I have now gotten a separate router but wondering shouldn't i still be able to connect to the superhub and check connection settings etc?

Yeah

192.168.100.1

It isn't working for some reason, not sure why as when I was configuring things I could get to the page...well think I might reconfigure things shortly any way.

General Maximus

when the shub is in modem mode it's address changes to 192.168.100.1 and your new router should be something like 192.168.1.1 unless you change it. During the brief time i had a shub i could still access it through my router and get to the connection tab and look at my power levels and stuff

Yeah thats the really weird thing, think I will reset my new router tomorrow morning and have a fiddle about with things cause at the moment its just not 100%

what did you end up buying?

Jumping
09-03-2012, 18:12
I bought an Edimax BR5474n but at the moment not that pleased with it so might send it back and thinking of getting an linksys e2000 as can get them for about £50

thenry
09-03-2012, 18:28
hmm.. yeah send it back and go get yourself a Linksys. theres a few heads on here that love their units :)

Well trying to arrange a return, after wrestling with it for a couple of hour...firmware wont change, I have got it to manage to work so I can connect to the Shub in modem mode but the webinterface just keeps timing out as soon as I start using it properly....grrrr hope they respond to my email soon so I can send it back.

09-03-2012, 21:21
where did you get it from

Jumping

overclockers, found an e2000 on the bay for £52 inc shipping so think i will get it once i returned the edimax.

good luck.

is that your budget 50£ ?

Jumping

No not really, but dont want to spend to much. You have something else to recommend that is a bit more?

tell you the truth I've derailed, TP Link ripped my heart out :( take a look at this site > http://www.smallnetbuilder.com

Meh, I find their reviews more than useless other than for the observational basics.

Jumping
09-03-2012, 22:32
Yeah its just a bit to much and not easy to find a recommendation without digging through a ton of information.

qasdfdsaq
09-03-2012, 22:50
That and their test client is idiotic and broken, making their results completely wrong.

Jumping
09-03-2012, 22:55
So what would you recommend? The linksys e1500 and the e2000 is about the same price and think the features from the e2000 makes it the choice for me unless there is something else you think is better.

Jumping
10-03-2012, 11:17
Well this morning it seems to be working ok, and unless they will take it back just cause im not happy with it...think i could be stuck with it...ohh well let see if I can persuade them to just refund me.

thenry
10-03-2012, 11:19
im sure you can get a refund youve only just got it. plus its not entirely about you liking it,, you mentioned it wasnt working properly. in any case 'its working now' means its hit and miss.

Jumping
10-03-2012, 11:25
Success they will refund me as soon as they get the unit back, it is working fine today which is weird. The webinterface just seem to stop loading quite frequently and doing changes to any config part is really slow and doesnt always stick...now just have to decide if I should order that e2000 or find something else.

good. not sure on router replacement but the wisemen on here would vouch for linksys units.

do you not want to go for a unit thats capable of functioning simultaneous bands - 2.4 - 5 GHz

Jumping
10-03-2012, 14:31
Yeah I guess that could be handy, but I think I would have more use for the gigabit ports...dont want to spend to much money either as its just to go on a blooming home connection.

ok qas, what router would you advise the guy to get apart from the cheap d link 615

qasdfdsaq
10-03-2012, 15:33
WNDR3700 but not without replacement firmware.

Or a TL-WR1053ND type if happy with single-band wireless.

thenry
10-03-2012, 15:36
you mean the TL-WR1043ND qas?

Alternative firmware you mean like DD-WRT? That TP link looks ok and reasonable priced too.

I finally gave up with the superhub after spending ages saying mine "just worked", all of a sudden it started dropping the wireless periodically.

Gone modem mode and put my old netgear back into play.

Which really annoys me, as I lose the gigabit ports, and the whole idea of a superhub was to eliminate two seperate devices.

On a plus side, I'm in charge of it, and I can even specify alternative dns servers, instead of having to configure each individual device sperately.

Mil, if it's just the wireless that's causing you issues why not have your Shub in router mode and turn wireless off, then connect your old netgear to it as a wireless access point? That way you get both gigabit ports and improved wifi.

Thats actually a good idea, Andy. I will look into that tomorrow, can't be bothered faffing around with networks any more today.

Just as a comparison, the superhub's wifi signal rated at -70dbm on the android app "wifi analyzer", and the old netgear router rates at -30dbm. The -30 indicating its over twice as strong as the superhub. >.>

Can you turn off the DHCP server when the SHUB is in router-mode? This would allow Milambar to carry on using DHCP on his Netgear router to handout alternative DNS server addresses.

Best regards
David

No, -30 indicates it's over 8000 times stronger. Which means your Superhub has a fault.

There's no way there should be that kind of a difference between two routers. I'm about to do some comparisons this evening of an in-situ Superhub but the wireless card itself is no stronger or weaker than typical cards from other manufacturers - i.e. with 1-2dB of most.

Another question for you experienced Virgin connection guys ;) do you have to clone the PC's MAC address when setting up the new router?

I see a lot of setup guys seems to always clone it but not sure if it's necessary for the Virgin or what benefit it would give. As if there is issues with the new router you could just turn the SHUB back into routing mode...or am I missing something obvious.

General Maximus
12-03-2012, 11:35
no you dont need to clone the pc's mac address. I think you would only need to do that if there was some sort of mac filtering and access control lists going on to prevent people from adding routers/switches and thus more devices in an enterprise kind of environment but VM do that with the modems. In their case they don't care how many devices are trying to use the connection.

Jumping
12-03-2012, 11:43
That was what I thought was the case as I got the connection going without doing it on the Edimax that I should be sending back tomorrow.

Jumping

Got the TP-Link WR1043nd in the house :) configured and up and running already was so much easier to work with than the Edimax also more ram and flash memory so if I want open wrt or dd-wrt on it should be much easier.

how do you switch the super hub to modem mode and what are the benefits of this?

Jumping
16-03-2012, 18:58
If you have the latest firmware r30 there is a tick box under advanced settings to enable modem mode, which turns of all the routing functions of the superhub and it acts just like a modem so you can use another router for the routing stuff.

Benefits...better wireless strength more reliable more options to configure etc etc :)
