View Full Version : General Anyone else experiencing slow internet?

All over the weekend and especially last night I've been getting slow web pages, slow ping times, packet loss, and loss of internet connection a couple of times.

In all cases (apart from loss of service obviously!) the problem lies on the hop immediately outside of the Virgin network on the telco side but, and here's the rub, only for certain websites. Last night ping times were 10-20 times slower to cableforum, my company's website (WebFusion), and bbmax speedtest than to the bbc or speedtest.net. Tested from multiple PCs having reset the SH back to factory, all on wired connections.

This morning all ping times have gone back to normal. Anyone else noticing problems with the Virgin network recently?

Yes.

Any idea what's going on? There's nothing on the status page I can find.

People on forums tend to answer your question with a YES.

At this time, VM are rolling out 100 meg (as you know). But this involves changes at the local hub, changes at the regional hub, street cabinet changes, cable works, resegmentation.

Service corwding is bound to occur in various places while they do all this work.

AFAIK, that is.

My excuse: I was barely awake and haven't quite figured out what the problem is myself. My best guess is Ignition's guess - bad/overloaded peering.

some websites have been extremely slow for me recently, but using a vpn proxy seems to fix all the issues; its probably VM messing up their peering again

I can't get to half the internet and some sites are slow as hell..

Can't call VM as the lines are busy

Wow, the 194.168.4.100 and 194.168.8.100 in particular DNS servers are well borked. No chance resolving www.xbox.com on either, and www.bbc.co.uk only resolves on the first one! I'm switching DNS while they sort this one out. They are really having a bad week!

Maybe it is the speed doubling but my area has had 100Mbit for about a year now. It's funny it's the edge of the VM network and nowhere internal. That said, my speed is great now and ping times are back to normal.

half the sites I usually go on are either partially not working or completely dead tonight, this is definitely a virgin media network issue somewhere. The virgin media community isn't working for me either, nor is 'my virgin media'.

I'm using googles DNS servers on my router and PC and still having problem accessing certain websites.

I think its a routing issue.

Looks like a circuit or routing failure somewhere on the backbone, there seem to be a few sites unreachable from here at the moment.

Same here, 17:50 to 18:05 complete loss and since randomly can't connect to some websites

Went to the VX Status page, using another provider, and showed Broadband Good Service
What a joke this page is, every time I cannot connect, this shows Broadband Good Service

Therefore went and rebooted the modem, router, and computers
No difference, silly me

Just left with Windows Live Messenger unable to connect
No Default Gateway found

For the last week or so the internet has been up and down, I'm in the PO8 area.
Today I've seen some pages not load and some of my IRC connections dropping. I just went to play MW3 and I cannot connect which is very annoying.

As for Virgin status, its all a load of trollop, last week online was reporting just TV on demand problems, the phone was saying there was an internet problem in the PO7 area (I'm po8 so its close enough) Not one mentioned that the TV service was down!
Who wants to trust virgin media status lines and pages when they are unreliable!

From VM's Facebook page: We're aware of a network issue that may be affecting some customers' broadband service. Investigations are underway and we're hoping for a resolution as soon as possible. Due to call volumes, if you're trying to report this issue, lines may be engaged.

It's also headlining the VM support forums too.

"Just a quick update, we have engineers on site currently dealing with this problem and we are starting to see an improvement already. We're going to continue working on this issue until services are completely restored."

That would imply a single fault at one site could cause a major nationwide problems. Interesting.

My browser of choice is Opera.Enabling the TURBO feature on the browser usually fixes speed issues. It`s so much faster than IE8 anyway.

i have been having issues from 20th Dec and was told on 20th Jan that would be 3rd march Maybe before fixed ...
i posted the following on virgin forum too ...

hi

i have being having slow down since 20th dec 2011 !!!! when i call VM on 5th Jan 2012 was told that the issue would be fixed by 18th Jan ... so when i was still having same issues i called them on 19th Jan ,

i have being having peak time slow downs and i was told that it will not be fixed until 3rd March !!!! maybe !!!!!

i was told that it was because of customer miss use ???? too many people all using there max internet at same time ??? and also to many people on peer to peer ?? YER WOT EVER !!!!!!!!!!

the manager i spoke to did not agree that this issue was not good enough as they say that i have conection and i sould not expect good speed at busy times !!!!

i finally goit him to agree to to a complete refund as the point of paying for internet is for when you want to use it !!! not for internet when your out at work/school/whereever but in your home !!!

I have noticed that this is not only in my area (31) but looking round forums it seems to be all over the contry !!!

I have been a big big supporter of Cable internet from the start !! and was on Blueyonder from the beginning, then tellywest to NTL then to Virgin !!! every home i have had i only had cable internet !!! and always always recomended them because of the quality and stablity of the connection !!! up until this i would always get almost full speed connection any time day or night !!!!

It seems to me that all started to go down hill for me once i had my New TiVo box installed ??? is this coincidence ???? but when i my hd box replaced by engineer they told me they were flat out doing 15-20 installs A DAY !!!! and as the TiVo box they claim has its own 10mb feed is this the issue ???

fingers crossed someone will tell the real reason for the issues

The Tivo box 10 meg feed is not on a frequency that your internet uses. So that won't interfere with the main broadband save for any wider congestion on the line card at the local hub.

That said if your area 31 is my area 31 (Reading - there appears to be more than one, e.g. Cambridge) then I've seen some decline in my previously perfect service since around that time. It's improved now.

I was told that the line card I'm on was part of a resegmentation in December and I also read that there were major uplift works at the Reading hub which I suspect would lead to some temporary crowding of users onto existing line cards while they bring the additional or upgraded kit into service. This is specu;lation though.

In the past week, the service has improved and I note much lower latency on the TBB graph.

As for "all over the counbtry" - the only common factors might be:

1/
Simultaneous area upgrades causing the phenomenon you've described - this would be a per area phenomenon not interlinked.

2/
Current peering issues (I believe VM don't pay for anough peering bandwith - see LINX for details)

3/
Increase of customer usage in your immediate locality (optical node - the street cabinet with 240v label on it).

Prolly a combination of the three and I think you had already worked this out.

yep i understand that the Tivo box is not surpossed to be on the same interwebs as your connection ... BUT it still seems a very BIG coincidence that mine and looking like many others is after virgin had the big big push before christmas to get lots of people onto the tivo ...... seems to me that they did not have the backbone setup to cope with all the new customers !!!! which if correct is a bit short sighted to be honest ?? but hey what do we know :D:D:D:D
if this is the case i just wish they would admit some slowing and give us honest upgrade dates ....

yep am in area 31 but its Lichfield
