If i did upgrade would it be safe to assume id get upgraded from 50 to 100 when it happens?

Or, more likely is there some kind of cut off date, i assume there is or there would be loads of Pikeys like me thinking the same thing ?

I don't see why Virgin would be bothered about anyone doing this, they'd be happy for the extra revenue.

I’m an existing customer. If I change my package, will I get a second speed boost for free?

If you upgrade your broadband speed before we give you the speed boost, then yes we’ll give you the new speeds on top when your area is ready.

Are the [current] upload speeds going to be doubled too?Yes they will be increase to remain at the 10:1 ratio they currently are, although (as per the FAQ over on the Community Forum (http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Announcements/We-re-doubling-our-customers-broadband-speeds/m-p/958425#M63)) sometimes they may not be changed at the same time due to network requirements

I upgraded from 30mb to 50mb this evening for the purpose of getting my speed doubled to 100mb not bad for an extra £6.50 a month I think.

Just upgraded from 50 to 100. Post code checker was showing as double up from July onwards in my area and as we've only just been enabled for 100mb I couldn't wait, the impatient barsteward that I am. On VIP50 and cost an extra £7 per month, wonder if that includes the "reduction" in cost that is being mentioned for exisiting 100mb customers on might I get a little extra as and when. <fingers crossed>.

Oh and free install and activation too.

That really shouldn't have happened - you should have had an engineer for the upgrade to 100Mbit so they can install a SuperHub

Did you already have a superhub or one of the older modems.

Same one I have I thought It couldn't handle 100mb speeds so I stayed on 50 as I didn't want a superhub. Have you noticed much difference going to 100 speed. I use mine wirelessly to play the 360 and ps3 online gaming and wondered if I'd notice much difference.

The VMNG300 can handle 100meg speeds fine and was tested much higher. And no, I have no idea how VM can say they have tested it and it only achieved 92meg for their recent Q&A about the speed doubling. Sounds like FUD.

*of course shenanegens may occur when 8 downstreams is common, which only the superhub will support. But the VMNG300 will still connect to the network and is likely to give you your full speed until there is congestion in your area.

So the VMNG300 can handle 100/10 ?

I really do hope so as i dread the thought of changing over to the superhub. It's not the superhub i fear it's the bloke that comes over to change them out. When i last upgraded the first tech come in changed the modem to the vmng300 and left my house without even telling me. Turns out he never called in to get the modem activated. Took me hours on the phone to get someone to come the next day and finish the job correctly. The next guy a day later was even worse. he did not have his own mobile with him and never even knew the phone number for activations. he had to use my phone to call customer services. All in all he was here for over two hours and only spent about five mins working. the rest of the time was on the phone. After a while he admitted that he and his collogues never received training in 50mb installs they only were given instructional paperwork the week before.

I pray it's gotten better by now.

Virgin won't force anyone to change their equipment as part of this upgrade. They will offer the SuperHub if required but it's completely up to you whether to change or not

Obviously if you don't get the speed you expect with kit Virgin have recommended you change, then it'll be your choice

VM will do their damnedest to punt you onto the Superhub, but the VMNG300 (it needs a catchier name) does definitely work on 100meg as there are a few users here who have wrangled it.

[Edit]

Well perhaps they wont! Thats a nice shift from the previous policy of forcing poor CPE on people :)

So if I call them to go onto 100mb now they might insist I get a superhub rather than increase my speed on my VMNG300.

Well perhaps they wont! Thats a nice shift from the previous policy of forcing poor CPE on people :)Virgin (and ntl/telewest before them) have never forced a CPE change as part of the tier uplifts.

To be blunt it's your own issue if you end up getting less than you are paying for because you've not followed Virgin's advice

Did you say it was £7 extra a month and do you have to start a new contract doing it.

I wish they allowed this for non-vip 50meg customers, but we all have to have an engineer visit to go up to 100meg. I've got TWO Shubs and near ideal power levels and SNR and they still won't do me without my taking time off work.

I wonder why they don't have to 'check the wires' (as I was told) for vip50 customers but they do for standard 50meg customers? I assume you guys have gold plated wires in place or something. :)~
